Top tips for renting a car in Chiang Mai

  • Perhaps the best place to hire a car in Chiang Mai would be directly from the airport when you land for your own comfort and convenience. You can find the rental desks in the passenger hall on the first floor, opposite the domestic and international arrivals lounges. It is also possible to find many local operators in the city itself, offering a wide range of vehicles, from city cars to family cars.  The advantages of renting from a local company will often provide you with free delivery and pickup of your car to your chosen point with free child seats included.
  • If you have chosen a rental agreement which requires a tank refill on your return, it may be useful to note that there is a local petrol station on the road leading up to Chiang Mai Airport (CNX), and another Shell station on the main highway before you turn off for the airport road. Most petrol stations on major highways are open 24 hours, especially near Chiang Mai city, although smaller stations in more remote areas often close after dark.
  • Drink driving is a common occurrence in Thailand.  The legal limit for driving with alcohol in your system is 0.5g per litre of blood and if you are stopped and found to be over the limit, you may be landed with a hefty fine or, in the worst-case scenario, prison time, especially if you are involved in an accident.  Be extra vigilant on the roads and avoid night driving as an extra precaution.
