Terrible handling of a stolen property case

We checked out of the Courtyard Marriott late morning of the 28th after a stay for a wedding nearby, and left our luggage with them to go hiking in the beautiful surrounding mountains. 3 hours later we returned to pick up our luggage and move to a different hotel downtown. Upon arrival at the new hotel we realized my wife had left a piece of jewelry at the Courtyard, in a specific place in the bathroom. "No biggie" I thought, if she knew exactly where it was and trusting the staff of a well established hotel chain. We called them to check, they went to ask housekeeping. No response. Called again. Received an apology for "being slammed" in a hotel which we saw around 5 people total staying while we were there. Promised to check. No response. Called again. Said housekeeping would check. By this time it was late so when we didn't receive a response for the third time we left it till morning. In the morning managed to get through directly to housekeeping. They said they'd check - no response! Unbelievable. Finally got a line to the manager who wasn't there until noon so left a desperate message. All we received back was "we didn't find anything, contact the police if you want". A lack of response after 4 calls is one thing, the fact that an ignored query and the elapsed time probably enabled the theft of this item is another, but the real kicker was that all they could offer as a solution was to "contact the police" was galling. I expect better from Marriott who pride themselves on customer service - not in this experience by a long shot! The lost - I will now say stolen - item was precious to my wife, and I can't help suspecting a more professional response would have meant it returned to her. If you must stay here, beware of your belongings and I sincerely hope you don't need to ask the staff to go beyond their bare minimum - you may be as disappointed as we were.
