Hiring a car in Bonaire is one of the best ways to get around the island. Hiring a car is more convenient than taking the public buses, as you can leave when you want, and you won’t have to depend on the timetable of others to get where you want to go. While the driving laws in Bonaire continue to follow the driving laws in the Netherlands, you are definitely driving on a Caribbean Island, with a slightly more relaxed approach behind the wheel. You must still drive on the right-hand side of the road, like in the Netherlands, and the speed limits are set at 40 kmph (25 mph) in urban areas and at 60 kmph (about 40 mph) on country roads. There are no highways or traffic lights on the island, and drivers are generally relaxed, with very few incidents of speeding registered, so you can get behind the wheel and enjoy visiting the island without the stress of the city.

In order to hire a car in Bonaire, you will need to be at least 18 years old when collecting the vehicle. You will need to present a valid driving licence from your home nation, and we recommend that you provide an International Driving Permit if your licence is presented in a language that uses a different alphabet, but otherwise it is not necessary. Some rental companies may apply a surcharge for drivers that are under the age of 25, but you can check this with the company when making your booking.
