For the price, location, and history, it was fantastic. Mattresses could be updated, but everything was clean and the staff was polite and helpful. We enjoyed the gorgeous lobby and bar every evening and downstairs Starbucks lower level. A real gift to Chicago.
Rooms are run diwn and feel cramped and not clean.
I love an old hotel, but this one needs a refresh. My room was dark, had peeling wallpaper and poorly patched plaster, and no coffee maker. Basic amenities (coffee in the room or available in the lounge/lobby; early/late check-in) were only available for an extra charge. I couldn’t find a room service menu, if that was even available. There were multiple loud families on my floor - as a mom, I’m sympathetic, but we paid to be on the executive floors intended for business travelers. It all made jet lag and early meetings more difficult for our team. The staff were kind, but clearly struggling to get staffing levels back where they need to be for such a large hotel. I’ll skip this one on my next trip to Chicago, until it gets some rehab.
This was our 4th time staying at this formerly grand hotel, and I’m afraid it will be our last. Services at the hotel have been scaled back to a point that is a bit embarrassing and it’s not just the post-pandemic version. In the middle of our stay in Feb 2019 we had room service available on Day 1, then poof it was discontinued on Day 2, never to return. We thought we were in the Twilight zone. The room we had this time had wallpaper peeling, hot water in the showers that was intermittent and a refrigerator that kept your items at a not very refrigerator-like 70 degrees. Anyway Hilton has let this once proud building lapse into irrelevancy and it’s a shame.
Pros. When I called for help with the Internet, I quickly received explicit instructions how to fix the problem. After I thanked them and hung up, I followed the directions and it worked immediately. 5 minutes later, the person who had helped me called me back to make sure I was able to solve the problem. That has NEVER happened to me in 40 years of travel. Extraordinary service that made a HUGE positive impression on me.
Cons. The electronic pad in the room which offered a lot of information about the hotel and the neighborhood did not work when I tried to use it....probably because the hotel’s systems had gone down a few hours before we checked in. It worked the following morning. The Check-in lines were very long, but moved fairly quickly and staff did a good job handling it. This was nobody’s fault.
