With car hire in Almaty, there is no doubt that your car hire choice will be utterly personal and itinerary dependent. Consider the road trips and the terrains you will be taking on, as they are vastly different from region to region. City dwellers can benefit from a compact economy motor, but mountains, forests or desert areas would be easier to tackle with a more powerful vehicle, such as an SUV.

The speed limit in Almaty is quite standard, albeit a little on the conservative side compared to Western Europe. The urban roads are strictly regulated at 60 kph in the city and 90 kph on larger suburban roads. Motorways are restricted to 110 kph. Avoid spot fines by remaining on the side of caution and paying attention to road signs.

Parking in Almaty does not seem to be a problem, with a lot fewer car parks than in other cities and many free spaces being used as parking areas, perhaps even unofficially. Street parking seems open, with meters on select streets; as long as you have currency and can understand the signs, you should be fine. Alternatively, finding a hotel, apartment block, shopping centre or other public venue is a safe bet.
