KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Rome

  • Explore the beauty of the Italian landscape with a hire car and discover everything Rome and its surrounding areas have to offer. The coastline is about 40 minutes away by car and the scenic Riserva Naturale della Marcigliana, located north of city, is also definitely worth a visit at just about half an hour away by car.
  • Get a hire car directly at the International Fiumicino Airport Rome upon your arrival to reach the center of Rome in about half an hour. Located in the Office Tower 2, the airport’s car hire center houses companies like Avis, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt. Rome’s other airport, Ciampino, also offers car hires and is 30 miles from the city center.
  • Rome operates ZTL – zona traffico limitato, which means limited traffic zones. The ZTL is in place to avoid congestion and pollution in major Italian cities during peak times. Be careful not to enter such a zone, as they are controlled with cameras and fines will be issued. Ask your hire car provider about details and familiarize yourself where you can go with your car (if you have a hotel in the center, you may be issued a pass to reach it). Also consider choosing a parking garage in the suburbs and use public transport to reach the city center.
  • Rome is a very old city and therefore the streets can be narrow and a challenge to navigate for someone who is used to broader streets. Vespas are common in the capital and known to whizz through alleys quickly, so drive attentively.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Rome for ₪73 or less
  • Book your rental car in Rome at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • Economy rental cars in Rome are around 91% cheaper than other car types, on average

Research and learn what the street signs mean. Prepare a mapping App in advance and set it up on cars system so to be hands free. Navigating, Driving, street signs with rules, motor bikes and bicycles cutting in front and pedestrians having the right away are all in play. Be prepared.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Avoid the Budget offices on via Sardegna. There are several rental offices in the Termini train station ... if you rent from there you can also try some less expensive local options (ideal for cases where you'll pick up and drop off in the same place).
BarbaraOct 2023
Rent from an agency on the outskirts on Rome. Don’t try to drive in the city.
HaroldoOct 2023
Best not to drive unless you’re familiar with the city.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Rent a small car, covertible if possible. Traffic is not so bad as people say, even parking is not hard to handle. But, renting a Vespa is much better…
Verified travelerJul 2023
Drive with confidence and clarity. If you are clear and accurate I what you intend, there are no problems
Verified travelerAug 2023
In the early morning and evening parking in Rome was not an issue.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Don’t go to the rental desk, head straight to the pickup area.
ChrisAug 2023
Rent from airport to get out of city easier

Get a tutorial on using the features. Still haven’t figured out the cruise control and speed limiter on the Peugeot 2008 we rented.
MarkJun 2023
If you have a couple of bags to take to the car, grab a trolley. It’s a long walk.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Driving in aroma was a little chaotic. Be aware of restricted zones
Verified travelerAug 2023
Typical of any other big city
Verified travelerMay 2023
Yes document any damage to your vehicle and before you leave the premises, go back to the office to make sure they are updated. Don't drive in Rome. It is less expensive to take a taxi then to navigate the streets and find parking.

FAQs about renting a car in Rome

  • What type of car is recommended for driving in Rome?

As the streets in Rome are very narrow and parking lots are hard to find, opt for a smaller car like a Mini or a Fiat 500. If you want to explore the surrounding countryside and park your car outside the city, an SUV is a good choice, as Italian country roads can have potholes.

  • What’s the speed limit in Rome?

Speed limits, unless otherwise indicated, are 31 mph (50 kph) in residential areas, 68 mph (110 kph) on countryside highways and 80 mph (130 kph) on freeways. Always adhere to the speed limits as the Italian police are very strict with speed regulation and fines can be high. Speed cameras are also commonly used in Italy.

  • Where are the best places to park in Rome?

Unless your hotel has a parking space included, it is not wise to attempt finding a parking space in the city, as they are hard to find and are often reserved for locals. Choose a P+R outside the center and close to a metro station, such as the P+R Batistini, P+R Valle Aurelio, or the P+R Laurentina. With only around €2 ($2.25) per 12 hours, they are also a priceworthy option. Parking lots close to the Old Town are also a possibility, but, with a rate of up to €40 ($45) per day, are a rather expensive solution.

KAYAK

Pros:

Location in terminal.

Cons:

Horrific experience with Hertz in Rome Fiumicino. Rented a car that had a tire blown as soon as I started driving it. Called the Hertz location in Fiumicino and no answer. Called multiple times, but no answer. Had to call the US number only to get transferred to Road Side assistance for Canada? Ended up changing the tire myself then drove to my hotel. Kept calling Hertz in Rome (total of 8 times that day) but no answer. Tried calling Naples (no answer), Milano (no answer) and Salerno (answered but told me I wasn't covered because Hertz had franchised their business in Italy?). Suggested I pay for the flat myself and be on my way. In order to salvage my trip, I did just that. Only to find that the tire had prior damage in two places and it was unlikely that it could withstand another "patch" job. Nevertheless, I paid the fee for just that and tried to get ahold of Rome Hertz another 14 times over 4 days. No answer! The car sat parked because the newly patched tire went flat again! Seriously, I can't make this stuff up. Called the US again without help as they simply said I needed to deal directly with Rome Hertz only. I used Twitter to get a road side assistance number for Italy and the towed the car finally, while I had 5 days left on my rental. They refused to take me to Hertz to get a replacement saying I needed to pay a taxi for that (I was 60 miles away from the nearest location). I simply told them to keep the car and I would deal with it upon my return to Rome via another means. When I got to Rome, they had the nerve to charge me for a one way drop off charge in addition to my full contracted rate. NEVER AGAIN WILL I RENT FROM HERTZ/DOLLAR/THRIFY.

KAYAK

Pros:

Fantastic car. Comfortable and drove well. New too.

Cons:

Having to wait 2 hours in Rome to check-in with our reservation. A line ordering system that did not make any sense (draw a number for two other companies but not Dollar). Then, stand around because there was only standing room only. Really not efficient.

KAYAK

Pros:

Car was virtually new and great for our vacation.

Cons:

Wished for an explanation of some simple things -- how to buy gas or turn on the A/C.

KAYAK

Pros:

Great little car (Fiat Panda) to drive through narrow Tuscan city streets.

Cons:

Pick-up was chaos: We had booked the car at Dollar, but no Dollar was to be found at the pick-up in the airport in Rome (we were not aware that Dollar was a Hertz company, nor were we informed). The queue to pick up the car was very long, and it took approx. 1.5 hours before it was our turn. Overall, a very poor car pick-up experience.
