Road sizes in Palmerston are pretty standard and suit all types of vehicles. Finding parking in the main shopping areas can be troublesome sometimes, which is always more difficult when driving a bigger car. If like many others, you plan on taking road trips and exploring more of the Northern Territory, you'll want to consider hiring a 4x4 vehicle, to cope with the diverse terrain. If you're travelling on a budget, stick with smaller, compact cars that are more efficient when it comes to fuel consumption.

The speed limit in Palmerston and surrounding areas follow the Australian road rules, and driving in the city and built-up areas generally comes with a limit of 60km/h unless otherwise stated. If you're driving close to a school or area where children often are, look out for road signs indicating the speed limit. In the surrounding areas, away from built-up sections, the speed limit ranges between 110 km/h and 130 km/h on some of the major highways. You'd have to travel far out of Palmerston to find a highway with a speed limit above 110 km/h.

Parking in Palmerston is typically free, except inside certain shopping centres or parking garages. The city centre is free, provided you have a ticket, which is free to obtain through the PayStay parking app or by using a parking meter when there is one. While parking, you must comply with the time limits in place at that spot, indicated on the meter. These time limits are used to ensure traffic turnover and help support local businesses. The meters and tickets are monitored by law enforcement between 08:00 and 16:00 during the work week. During any other time, you can park in the same space for free without any time limit.
