Hiring a car is the best way to get yourself around this holiday island, particularly if you’re on the more mountainous western side. The public transport is mainly centred around Palma de Mallorca, with buses running between some of the smaller towns, but they don’t provide enough coverage for you to really explore. There are some good driving roads here, with the road to Sa Calobra rated as one of the most scenic in Europe. You can visit the island’s historic towns to see medieval architecture, like Alcudia’s Old Town, the seaside resorts of Puerto Portals, and the cultural capital of the island, Palma de Mallorca. There’s also Artà, in a lush farming valley of olive, fig, and almond orchards.
The first thing to note is that you’ll be driving on the opposite side of the road to what you’re used to in the UK, but it won’t take long to make the adjustment and feel comfortable and confident on the roads. Just make sure that you don’t overtake on the right, as this is always treated as a traffic offence. Also, beware of the many speed cameras and radar traps on the island – it’s a busy tourist destination, so the Guardia Civil police are present. The speed limits are a little higher than you’ll be used to in the UK; you can drive up to 120 kph (75mph) on motorways.
While you are allowed to drive with a licence from the age of 18, car hire companies may only offer vehicles to people who are 21 and over. In addition, KAYAK has specific classes of more powerful and high-end luxury cars that are only available to those at least 23, with some reserved only for those who are 25 and older. You will need to carry your driver’s licence with you at all times, and your vehicle must have proof of third-party insurance. All the necessary legal paperwork will be provided when you collect your car, and you must ensure that it is always in the car while driving.
