Terrible experience. I booked a car and went to the counter with confirmation. They told there is not a car available at the price I made my reservation and for me to get a car and have to pay twice for an upgraded car that I did not need. I asked for additional document to where you can find this policy but they just avoided the discussion. This place used to be a good economical alternative for rental cars but maybe they are being operated by individual franchisees that want to cease short term opportunities rather than long term ethical responsible corporate standards. I’m a seasoned traveler and will stay away from Payless.

Payless gave me a car with 56,000 miles, scratched up, not washed properly. A gas guzzler. I rented it for 3 weeks When I went to pick it up Payless demanded $150 more or they we charge me 35 cents/ mile if I drive out of a 200 mile distance zone. I didn't see anything about this when I prepaid. It seemed like a bait and switch.

The clerk said about 10 words to me, charged me a $17/day insurance that I had said I didn’t want, when I asked about the high cost, 6 of the words were “tax is expensive at this location”, the car had a blown speaker, and the windshield washer was broken even after I put a gallon of fluid inside. I will avoid Payless in the future.

Price was good and people at the counter were friendly. My only complaints were that the car smelled like smoke, which isn't the rental agency's fault but they could have taken the vehicle out of service to get cleaned before renting it to someone else. I was also given the typical sales approach of being asked if I wanted something, insurance in this case, but not given all the options which made it seem like one of the given options was mandatory. So the person at the counter asked if I wanted full insurance or just basic but not asked if I didn't want insurance at all. This will usually fool a lot of people if they don't want to buy the insurance there.

Payless has same prices than other car rental but much less value. They gave me an older Sonata with a lot of miles, blown speakers and missing antenna. The car had dark, somewhat reflective tinted windows that made it difficult to see out of the side mirrors. The car was very clean other than that. To the agents at the counter: nobody wants to know about your dates while they wait for you to fill up paperwork. Save it for when no one is there. Thank you.

My flight was delayed and didn't get in until 1130pm, although my friend was there from another flight at 1045 at the counter. I knew this could possibly be the case so I had given her the copy of the reservation and told her she will need to rent it because I wouldn't get there before closing. They did not allow her to use the existing reservation even though she had a copy of it and asked to add herself as a driver. Instead they gave her a walk up rate and charged her $700 for 5 days. My reservation that I had secured was $188. Fair? I don't think so. Affordable? No, completely outside of my budget. Had to return the car immediately. Avoid Payless. All other rental counters were open for the late night arrivals. I think they actually used customer service and most likely stayed past closing.

On a holiday weekend they should have had more people at the rental counter. There was about a 30 minute wait. Also they want you to sign the inspection paper before seeing the vehicle. There were many more scratches and dings on the car than what was noted on the inspection report.

Alamo was great. But it was my second choice, after my first choice -- some no name rental agency called Mex, selected initially via Kayak, which routed me through Rentcars.com -- was a friggin disaster. I landed at 6 pm, the time of my reservation, only to discover that the rental office was already closed. There was no one to help me, no number to call, no customer service from anyone in that chain, including Kayak. It was a friday evening at 6. I tried 4 other rental agencies; they were either out of cars or were asking insane amounts of $$ for them. I had to get a ride from the airport, and come back the next morning to rent from Alamo. (Which was great.)Alamo was great. Avoid Mex Rent a Car and Rentcars.com at all costs. No one picks up the phone at Mex and you can't leave a voicemail. The number for Rentcars doesn't work, and the email responses are all in Portuguese. I'm not kidding. Why Kayak continues to use these vendors is a mystery to me. Makes me reconsider my choice in travel apps.

The whole Enterprise experience was really great and much better than most other rental car agencies. The SD staff was really accomodating with a short notice on the rental due to flight issues and drop off at LAX location was so easy and incredibly accomodating.

I was able to make a reservation at a location that is currently closed d/t COVID. I showed up at the location and it directed me to another location that was also closed (this location closed d/t hours). Ultimately I took $40 worth of ubers around to track down my rental car and Enterprise did nothing to try and help me. They wanted to charge me 2 times what I agreed to on my reservation in order to rent a car from them. I will never use them again. I wasted 2 hours of my time driving around and talking with Enterprise associates that were ultimately not helpful at all. Horrible experience.

I was overcharged about $1200 from the agreed upon rate because, according to Dollar, I dropped the car off at a different location than originally stated, which is not true. I dropped the car off according to schedule about an hour before it was due. There was no employee at the drop-off site, and the instructions said to leave the keys in the car. So I did, and Dollar ripped me off by charging me over twice what I had expected to pay. After contacting Dollar, they refuse to refund me. I'm never going to them again.

Efficient Pick Up.I paid for a Land Rover Discovery, I received an Infiniti. The car had 30,000 plus miles, with stains on the interior ceiling. There was minimal space in any of the rows and virtually no cargo space, despite being advertised as three large bags and seven people. VERY POOR experience and certainly not the luxury SUV I paid for.

Thrifty/Dollar's airport rental pickup line was L-O-N-G upon our arrival in San Diego. We had a long wait to pick up a car we had already reserved. Not enough people working the counters! The gal we had, though, was very patient and kind. But, even when we had already purchased third-party car insurance from Kayak, we were strongly encouraged to buy even more from Thrifty--an unexpected cost. That was irritating. Having finally gotten the paperwork done, we were sent to the car garage where it was very unclear as to what we were supposed to do! Aisles of categorized cars and so few people to ask for assistance. SO FRUSTRATING! We eventually found out we were just supposed to pick one out in our category! The Chevy Spark we picked out, though, was a great small car for the 2 of us--easy to drive, great gas mileage, could fit in tight parking spots, and great turning radius. However, the AC blower was wonky and did not work correctly all the time (and we really needed it while driving in the desert!). We really wanted properly working AC. Returning the car at J. Wayne Airport in Newport Beach was somewhat confusing, as well. We found out there were not enough people to do that job properly either--like properly checking the car for any damages. They took our paperwork and went off with it, with us not knowing if there would be any additional charges until they emailed us. Very frustrating, again. I guess the car rental companies just can't find people willing to work for them. They seem very short-handed.

My car was very clean and low miles (4,400). I chose a full size and grabbed a Nissan Altma, which is really a very nice car. I just recently switched to Thrifty, and really like the fact that they don't hard sell you to buy their insurance of the full tank of gas option. The rental counter in San Diego was very busy, but the agents were very efficient and worked quickly to minimize my wait time.

Staff not very knowledgeable about the charges, told me that I will be charged for gas refill based on the size of the vehicle, and still charged me $86 for a compact car gas refill. I called the company and they told me that "I agreed on the charges, and that they do not know why someone will tell me that it depends of the size of the car" So I was charged for gas refill on a truck, when in fact I used a compact car, and used less than 1/4th of the gas in the tank. Simply not fare with the customers, not truthful about the hidden charges.

The wait time to pick up was horrible. I got there around 11:55 and was checked in at nearly 1 pm. They had 3 people only working at the counter on a Saturday. And they have no customer service during during weekend so if you have an issue you will not be able to get any help until a weekday.

The staff was friendlyI’m a US born citizen, living overseas (military), and needed to use my military USAREUR license as well as my international drivers license as my US was stolen (stolen wallet). I called ahead of time to ensure I would be able to make a reservation and was told by customer service that I would. I booked my rental via prepay. When I arrived to the rental office, however, I was told that because I used my international license that I would have to do a second deposit of $250 but it would have to be via credit card. I was not told this beforehand, so I didn’t bring a credit card with me. The agent told me I could call the customer service hotline and get a refund do to the situation. However, I called and was told “well our policy is you need an additional credit card, so you will not be refunded, is there anything else I can do for you”. Now, I’m out $171 because of missing information and being told I could get my money back when apparently I can’t.

I was refused service due to the fact that I didn’t have a credit card completely matching my driver’s licence. The employees seemed condescending, even a bit rude. Creative marketing stated the pick up location was the airport. When I arrived, the on site person pointed out the location was near Tijuana and not safe. The actual charge to rent was triple what I paid. The cars tires were not balanced properly. I had to turn the car in early after 2 hours of renting because it was shaking so badly on the freeway.

Pick up in San Diego Broadway location was easy to find and customer service representative very friendly. However drop off in Las Vegas Fremont location was extremely stressful. No signs to direct us to drop off location, the address given lead us to golden nugget where staff was rude and not helpful. No indication in email or phone calls that car would need to be dropped off in parking garage 2nd level. For future reference at least include in confirmation email more direct information if drop off location isn’t easily accessible.

Budget was a true pleasure to work with. After HERTZ messed up my reservation and refused to correct it or refund me, I stepped away from their counter and made a reservation within minutes on KAYAK for a Budget car. Walked over to their counter and had a great experience in getting my car... even gave me a free upgrade option. Return was also easy and pleasant... all the CSR's were nice and friendly... unlike with HERTZ. HERTZ has lost all my business... and Budget is welcome to get it. :-)

My reservation was canceled due to my flight being delayed two hours. I let them know my flight info but they still canceled it. My $100 reservation went to a $450 to get a small kia. Luckily Budget was able to get me in a full size car for $200. I had heard stories about SIXt being bad but no clue they were that bad.A little due diligence could go a long way.

I didn't get the car I had reserved, because the office where I had schedule the pick up had closed 15 minutes before the posted time (8pm). I had to take a taxi to a different car rental location at San Diego airport 15 miles away from the planned pick up and another taxi ride for the return ($160 additional costs for me). Hertz office at the airport did not acknowledge their failure and quoted me a price 5 times as high than what was quoted via Kayak at the original pick-up location. I declined that offer and went to the competition, which was very helpful and much less expensive. It was also impossible to get Hertz on the phone while trying to pick up the care at the original place to resolve the issue. I will not use Hertz anymore, there are many other choices and not sure about Kayak.

Everything was fine. The only thing that could've been better was the check out line was a bit long. Only 3 folks working and a lot of unnecessary chatter with customers. I understand they are trying to be nice but when 7 people waiting for their check-in, it was somewhat frustrating.

The car was good and a good value, but I had to wait for more than a hour for the desk staff to arrive. The hours posted only on a piece of paper on the counter are 8-8. But that did not keep Hertz from renting me the car from 7am. If you have to buy insurance buy it ahead of time, I saved 20/day using Allianz instead of hertz.

Bait and switch!!! Reservations were made and confirmed for San Diego International airport….3 days before arrival, a confirmation came through for a Tijuana location (Otay Mesa)… by that time no rentals at desired location to be had. Turned out to be far cheaper to just cab and Uber, so don’t waste your time. I was very specific in reserving at the airport at the time of the reservation 6 weeks ago! Don’t recommend!!

I arrived at the San Diego airport to find that Economy Car rental had closed its San Diego location 4 months prior. I book the reservation 48 hours prior to arrival. So my reservation was made to a closed location. Luckily, another rental car company was able to assist me with a vehicle, bit at a much higher rate.

We had an excellent experience with Fox. However, while we were in line there was a completely uncooperative, mean, ornery female customer that challenged everything the poor girl working with her had to say. That sweet employee of Fox did not lose her cool, not for a second and the witch that was trying to get everything for nothing left with a vehicle. I commend her! She then took the next in line and continued on smiling.

I was charged fees I did not agree to. It was their error and they said that I initialed it so too bad. You’re suppose to catch the error on a 3x3 monitor. Another fee error was they said I was suppose to bring back the car the next day so there was a penalty for that as well. I had my rental reservation on my phone that had the correct date so they took that fee off. That proved to me that they can make mistakes so it was possible they goofed on the first problem.

After reserving and paying in-full in advance...and also working through telephone prompts...AND...talking to a live person at FOX to guarantee our reservation, we arrived in San Diego to find that they had released our rental car to someone else!! --It was a late evening arrival. --We had NO CAR. --THEY had no other cars available. --AND, we were two hours from our hotel. Inexcusable, HORRIBLE business practice. They should have kept our car available for us. Or, they should have provided a substitute vehicle. They should MORE than refund our money and pay for all of the outstanding price inconveniences. This was the WORST OUTCOME! They left us with NOTHING. Thank you for asking...

Wasn't even able to rent the vehicle due to me living in san diego and wanting to rent it to go to las vegas and back couldn't take it out of state, but if I wasn't from here I was told i could rent the car and take it wherever I wanted. Won't be renting from them! You want a great rental car place go with Enterprise, have nothing but rave reviews for them and was able to rent within ours of being told no from Ace!

We waited outside without prior notice in the heat for 2 hours to pick up our vehicle. When I went inside to ask if we could sit inside because were feeling lightheaded, I was told we couldn't. I tried to cancel my vehicle because I did not think it would be a good idea to drive in this conditions, and I was denied that as well.

I had to cancel my trip due to COVID concerns. I tried several times to cancel my rental car reservation. They would not and Priceline was of no help either. Southwest Airlines and the hotel were willing to work with me, no problems. I ended up paying for a car rental I never used and tried to cancel at least a week in advance. Terrible way to treat customers especially with COVID circumstances.

The day off, 3 hours before pickup, I get a phone call from the location telling me I need to pickup an hour early because they decide to close at 4 “today”. Of fine. “Oh and also you need to drop off before 10am in 2 days because we will be closed at 10am”. “Or you can pay an extra $60 for late drop off”. What?? Late drop off would mean I extend pass my 24h, which I’m not!! If you decide to close early how does that become my problem?? Very disappointing.

Booked a van for 2 days w/ 150 mile per day. Arrived at location to be told that policies “of this specific branch” have changed and are now 150 “per rental” (!!!??) Long story short it’s obvious Non sense. Worker at location didn’t show any compassion and on the phone corporate couldn’t do anything because “we are reservation center and customer center only works week days”. Customer service non existent, bummer for loyal and respectful customers like us but I guess that’s the way it goes now.

Poor attitude. Had to wait for an hr and dealt with screw you attitude from the front desk. The place was dirty and shady. The van was old (60k + miles) and dirty. It was conveniently near the airport so that is a plus. Most of all is the lady at the front desk who was awful.

Never rent from this placeNothing.It was a bait and switch in that I seriously doubt they even own a Corolla or similar economy car. Granted, they weren’t going to raise the price....but then the car they were trying to give me (after an interminable wait) was actually a huge dirty van...that had very significant damage from having been sideswiped. We are talking major body damage. So yeah, no thanks. Place is godawful. And they have signs everywhere about how you really need the insurance because this would cost X and that would cost Y. (Maybe take the money you earned from the sideswiping job and spend it on the needed body work?). Pretty ominous, and give everything else I’d seen of this company...but yeah, trying to drive around the city (parallel park, etc.) in a huge damaged dirty van? No thanks.

Overall it was a great deal for the Van. Only we had to pay an extra $100 because we dropped it off in LA and I didn’t realize this until we made our final payment. The staff was very nice and accommodating during the pick up process. We had no problem riding the shuttle to the rental car area but it was a little confusing because the van rental is off site so we had to take another van ( which the number was there to call for a pick up) this might need to be disclosed in the advertisement.

Once and never againBasically nothingCar I had contracted for was not available, offered me a minivan instead, not interested, was traveling by myself and wanted fuel economy. Agent said that I could return the next day to swap out for something more appropriate, but, due to my schedule, it would have taken me a whole day's drive to come back for the swamp...As an alternative, I asked if I could swap cars in Phoenix, which would have fit my itinerary better, was told there would be an upcharge for such. Else wanted to upcharge me for a more desirable model, I declined. Stood my ground, eventually, an economy type car was returned and assigned to me. It was noisy, lacked cruise control, a/c was very weak, as in "no fun to drive". To make up for the inconvenience, I was told I would be given a discount from my original intermediate type car reservation, however, that did not happen, they just hit my credit card with the full charge for the larger vehicle I never go to drive. When returning the car, their station was closed, with zero indication as to when they would open in the a.m. like was posted on their competitor's return stations. When I tried to return the car to their Phoenix location, I was told it was impossible to drop the car off there even though their San Diego agent had told me I could do so if willing to pay a penalty for doing so - basically one of their agents lied, no idea which one. All in all a lousy experience, since I now have to file a complaint to get them to correct the charge to my credit card account.

Car was not cleaned out when I received it. There was trash under the seats, some wrappers in the trunk and side doors. It was evening when I picked up so I didn't notice until the next morning. The car smelled faintly of stale food, so they clearly did a poor job cleaning overall. The customer service was rude and impatient. At least the pick-up and drop off had reasonable efficiency.

Over-priced and dishonestPacific charged me twice as much as they estimated on Kayak. If that had been the extent of it, I may have left it alone. The day after I returned my car, however, the manager called to tell me that there is a "new scratch" on the front bumper. The car they rented to me was already scratched up, so I assumed he had gotten something confused and I could simply send the pictures I had snapped of the car before driving away from the lot. He sent me pictures of a car I'm not convinced is the car I rented, with a big scratch in the bumper, and asked that I have my lawyer call him. I have never felt so mistreated by a company. I'm certain that I had nothing to do with a scratch in the car I rented, and after consulting Yelp I noticed that Pacific has pulled this same stunt with at least one other customer. Do yourself a favor and stay far away.

The man ask if all I have is a debit card and I tell him yes. He then says there is a $600 deposit. Let me say that again a 2-day rental at $38 and he wanted a $600 deposit. Now my mom who was with me used to work at Hertz car rental down the street and knows the industry. I am in school studying to be a lawyer. I asked the man to show me ANYWHERE ON MY CONFIRMATION EMAIL OR ANY LINK WHERE THERE IS A $600 DEPOSIT. He could not show me anything anywhere. I hold his company Pacific and your company as well responsible for doing business with a company of this sorts. I hope that my treatment was not because of my skin color, but I still do not know why this man had to insert himself into my transaction in the first place, and he could not show me anything in writing in regards to a $600 deposit.

My rental car was dead at noon June 15, 2021 on our way from San Diego to Yosemite National Park. We contacted National roadside assistance and they couldn't do anything to help. We had to be in the middle of nowhere under the heat of 100F. After 7 hours stranded, the tow truck came at 7:30 pm to tow the car and left our luggage on the street. The taxi came at 7:45pm to take us to the rental car office, but the office was closed at 5:00pm. Taxi only offered to take us to the nearby hotel and it had to be under our own expense. I couldn't stay at the nearby hotel because I already sent my under age children to the campsite close to the Yosemite National Park with a group of friends when the car broke down. I had to pay my friend to come back from campsite to car broke down location to pick us up and took us to the campsite while the Taxi denied to take us because it was too far. We had to spend $200 to cover that pick up. The road side assistance had confirmed that their agent at the airport close to the Yosemite NP had a reserve replacement car for us, but when we came to pick up the car. They had no car available; We had to call RSA and stayed on the phone with them hours and hours, I was stranded at the airport from 9:00 am to 3:45 pm on June 16, 2021 talked to a whole bunch of different people to end up with the smaller SUV that didn’t have enough room for everybody in my family and the luggage. Half of my family had to split with other cars within our group of friends. The rental car has ruined my family vacation. We had lost 2 vacation days. Instead of enjoying nature, we have been stranded on the road or the rental car office. We had lost our park’s fee and the campsite’s fee for nothing; the stress of dealing with the Roadside assistant customer service that won’t be able to help much drove us crazy. On the top of those issues, I have been charged almost $54 for the gas on the Buick Enclave and they didn’t give me the credit for the gas left on the Infiniti QX80 when the car was dead and it still had more than ½ tank of gas. With all of those issues National only give me credit of $199. I was so frustrated with National. I will never rent from National or deal with Kayak again. The worst customer service that I have ever deal with.

What I didin't know -- Even with the reading of the clauses which are difficult to understand -- was that my own car insurance company would be the one I'd contact first before this one kicked in. I like the ease of working with the airport car rental center staff. They were able to adjust my pick up location from downtown to right there at the rental center and it cost me a little less than anticipated. The third party insurance presented some questions at the counter, but nothing that could not be resolve in seconds. I would use Kayak in future travel plans.I didn't like the fact the add stated it was at the airport and there was an airport shuttle. The San Diego airport (Lindbergh Field) has a rental car center for all rental car companies. The add was for the downtown location and the shuttle only transports to the airport rental center. Also, the airport rental center is MCAR which is also MIDWAY

Good and fastWas the least pressure I've ever had from a car rental company to upgrade the insurance. Also because they are smaller there was no line to wait. I just looked over at the long line at Payless and glad I wasn't there.

Just okayEven though the car was cleaned when I arrived, and I had to wait for this cleaning, it was quite dirty once all the water dried. The windshield in particular had a thick film on the inside. It also smelled like smoke even though they supposedly don't let renters smoke in their vehicles. Once I cleaned it up myself and aired it out it was a okay car for a couple days. Probably wouldn't rent from them again as the price was the same as other rentals but I have never had a car that needed me to clean it from other agencies.

Deposit??Free upgradedDidn't get back my full deposit of $200 (which I wasn't aware of at the initial booking through Kayak). Not sure why. Only received $170 back. Not given a specific time to drop off (the person behind counter said,"so around this same time?" To which I said yes), yet when I dropped it off in the early afternoon (around the same time), I was charged for an extra day ($14.50). But even with that and now the more taxes I paid on the "extra day" it doesn't add up to $30. So where is the rest of my money? Will go with the larger company next time to save the hidden fees..

Amazing, friendly serviceThey gave us a complimentary upgrade, were full of helpful information. When we returned the car and were tight on time they actually drove us to our terminal in a car (since the shuttle was not due for another five minutes).

Rediculous WaitThe car was clean and in good working order. The attendant was polite and very patience. But really?, one attendant 3 days before Christmas?I had a reservation for a full size car, as my family was all meeting in California for the holidays. The reservation was set to pick up the car at 6:00 PM. I arrived at 5:55. When I arrived there were two people in front of me. Neither of which spoke english. The attendant tried and tried to explain the rental agreements while I waited. I waited for one hour for him to process two customers. When it was finally my turn, he informed me there were no full size cars available and that the car had to be cleaned. At that point, I was pretty upset. I had to wait another 20 minutes for the car to be cleaned. In all, the transaction took over 90 minutes and I did not get the car size I reserved. And for what?, to save a few dollars over one of the majors? I am very disappointed Kayak would recommend such a terrible 3rd tier car rental agency. Lorrin

They lure you in with low prices and then say whatever you chose is not available and charge you 50% more. They are short-staffed (on purpose?) and there was a long line of people waiting, both when I picked up and dropped off. And they make you wait outside with nowhere to sit. Just spend the extra money to get a car at the actual rental companies on site at the airport. The staff were friendly and seemed happy - maybe they enjoy running the scam.

Time between shuttles from the airport was very long. Add an hour, or more, to your plans to get to the rental agency and drive out.

Everything could have been better. This rental place is a joke and I will NEVER use them again.

Staff were talking about internal issues (employee not returning and renting a car correctly) for about 3 minutes before acknowledging and helping me. Then had to wait while they figured out which car was available and was told they couldn’t rent it because they car had technically not been returned in the system. They eventually spoke with employee that did not return car and returned it in system with an override. The company then started cleaning the car and I had to wait about 5 minutes for it to be “wiped down.” The license plates were expired and there were spill stains on 3 out of 4 mats. There was also sand in back seat and passenger seats and floors; it was not vacuumed. The tires were very worn.Returning the car was quick and simple. The car had no problems mechanically and smelled clean.
