San Diego car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in San Diego
Verified travelerSept 2026
Stick to the main rental facility in San Diego and not offsite
Verified travelerJul 2026
Get a car big enough for your group but don't overdo the size, many areas have smaller parking lots and smaller parking slots that a larger vehicle might not fit in too well.
Verified travelerJun 2026
My advice would be to rent a car that mirrors your experience at home. Traffic and roads are difficult to navigate. Better to be driving something familiar.
Verified travelerMay 2026
Try to get a clean comfortable hybrid. The San Diego area has many hilly areas in the surrounding areas.
Verified travelerDec 2025
Budget extra time for the off-site rental facility and the bus trip required to go to and from the terminal. Be suspicious of Payless car rental.
Verified travelerFeb 2026
Make sure you double and triple check the location of the rental car company.
Verified travelerFeb 2026
Go with one of the car rental places that is at the airport.
BrianDec 2025
Actually getting it from the airport. Don't trust the price you pay when it says "pay now".
Verified travelerNov 2025
Have what you need when you check in. They want your drivers license, if you decline their insurance you need your policy number. And your credit card.
Verified travelerOct 2025
Be mindful of optional LDW and RLP insurance. This is not mandatory. If you have credit card benefits or personal auto insurance, those are probably already included.
ShayneNov 2025
Rent from San Diego airport - avoid CBX, it's a long, long way to go to pick-up a rental.
Verified travelerJun 2025
Go through the challenge of an off-airport location, pricing is much better.
Verified travelerJul 2025
make sure you understand where the pick up location is. We took the Rental Shuttle from airport to Avis only to find out our car was at a different Avis location for pick up
TrenardJul 2025
Verify the car rental facility is ACTUALLY at the airport
Verified travelerAug 2025
Make sure the rental is for San Diego not Tijuana.
saApr 2025
I recommend a mid-size or larger vehicle, much easier to merge onto Freeways with a bigger engine. Check gas prices before re-fuelling, there can be a big price variance.
Verified travelerApr 2025
Double check that your rental company is at the rental terminal if you are arriving through San Diego international! There is a free shuttle from the airport to the rental area.
EvelineMay 2025
Be aware that not all the rental car companies at the airport are located at the rental car station. For some like U Save you two to then request a second pickup. Even calling in can be difficult. This will add to your delays and travel time, possibly not worth the savings.
Verified travelerApr 2025
There are no gas stations on the way to the airport so top up early and leave yourself time to check the car in — response can be slow.
Verified travelerApr 2025
Plan time accordingly. You have to wait for an uber to pick you up from airport. Lines upon arrival/departure. Shuttle back that comes every 30-40 min.
Verified travelerApr 2025
If you’re trying to book at the airport for convenience, double check that the rental company is at the San Diego Rental Car Facility and not off site.
Verified travelerMar 2025
With current fuel prices at $4-6 per gallon, economy is best
Verified travelerMay 2025
Make sure the company has vehicles before renting through third party
Verified travelerApr 2025
Use someone else. If you absolutely need to rent from them, make sure you can arrive before they close and also make sure you have an old school credit card where the credit card number is visible on the card (no Apple Card, no mobile payments). Without that, they will not rent to you. Stupid.
ShawnDec 2024
Check out the Turo app. There was a lot of options at decent prices. We paid ~50 a day for a Honda CR-V. The only issue is that you have to go to where the vehicle is located (usually at someone's house).
Verified travelerFeb 2025
Use a national brand if you are in a hurry. The off, offsite ones can take time.
KonstantinJan 2025
Rent from big well-known companies and look at their reviews and Ratings Before you rent.
ChristineJan 2025
Make sure they actual have a car for the day of your booking
Verified travelerJan 2025
go early in morning if pissible. no line
Verified travelerNov 2024
For convenience, get a rental at the airport, don't use this company. For the price, it was the best price for a rental vehicle there was but getting there, is a difficult transition.
Verified travelerSept 2024
Pay attention to parking signs, look out for one ways, and give yourself enough time to go to each place.
Verified travelerSept 2024
In San Diego, a midsize sedan or a small suv. Bigger can be difficult to find parking.
Verified travelerOct 2024
Book at least two days ahead so you can use a kiosk
Verified travelerOct 2024
Call the rental company directly to make sure they have cars available.
Verified travelerSept 2024
If you can, rent from a place not at the airport to save money on the airport tax/fees (38%!). Look over your receipt very carefully - Payless employees will try to scam you.
Verified travelerJun 2024
EVs are great in SD (at least Teslas). Lots of superchargers and if you charge after midnight, it's pretty cheap. Even drove to and around LA for a day and then back. Cost about $25 total - that's about the same as 5 gallons of gas for a lot of driving. $9 to top off at a charger near the Santa Monica Pier, and then $16 at a supercharger back in SD.
DougJun 2024
Prepare to wait — and possibly settle for less — to get their very discounted price. BTW, be advised SD car rentals add 35% Port Tax after/on top of advertised pricing.
Verified travelerJul 2024
Make sure your rental location is not near the Mexico border if you are flying into the San Diego International Airport.
MatthewJun 2024
Make sure to double-check the location if expecting a rental close to the airport.
Verified travelerJul 2024
Make sure you book your car from the airport rental center.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Make sure the hertz you pick up from isn’t closed.
Cheryl LynnApr 2024
Use your own insurance and get a small cer to save!
Verified travelerApr 2024
I would like to know any extra charges that would be tacked on upfront, not when I get handed the bill. Also If going to Mexico (Ensenada) Do I need insurance for Mexico and the United States or just Mexico? I was charged for both. Also If I don't go through an Airport should I get charged for it? And if I'm only using the car in Mexico should I get all of the charges for use in California or the USA?
ColinMar 2024
If you have proof of liability insurance with your own insurance provider, you can save some money. If you don't have documented proof, then you have to purchase.
BenjaminMay 2024
Make sure that the online site you rent through schedules your pick-up @ the location you want. You cannot assume that the address is the right location!!
Verified travelerMar 2024
Be sure to verify the car you are getting. We arrived and only choice was mini van and we reserved SUV.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Make sure the rental car company is located at the rental car shuttle drop off not a different location.
AngieApr 2024
Go hybrid. Where we stayed didn't have a lot of charging options, plan ahead
TonyApr 2024
All rental cars are off site so plan accordingly.
Verified travelerDec 2023
Try to rent directly from the Company. Sometimes they have way better offers!
Verified travelerDec 2023
Close to the trolley. Very convenient.
Verified travelerDec 2023
Everyone was really really nice!!
Verified travelerFeb 2024
This location is about a 10 minute Uber ride from the airport. Thought it was at the airport when we booked. Was not a big issue, but something to keep in mind.
Verified travelerJan 2024
I learned to drive in San Diego. I am always surprised when I return to see the average speed everyone drives gets faster than previous visits. 15 mph over limit now.
RicardoDec 2023
Airport rentals come with an extra fee. Rent from non-airport location if possible.
Verified travelerDec 2023
Not sure how I feel about the car renting business right now.
JanetDec 2023
Don’t feel you have to upgrade just because the sales person at the desk tells you you need to. He’s just trying to upsell you and there’s no reason for it.
PattiNov 2023
Driving in San Diego is a breeze with a GPS. Avoid the major highways during rush hour and you’ll have no issues. All of the main attractions were within a short driving distance from our Airport- Harbor Island hotel Rent from a a major company - AVOID U-Save. It did save some $ but not worth the aggravation.
Verified travelerOct 2023
If you have car insurance then it most likely have rental car coverage. Dont bother buying extra insurance from the rental agencies. Always best to call your car ins company and check about the coverage then if the rental co tries to pile this on you have some knowledge to deny it.
EnmanuelNov 2023
Go to Avis, they are great
GaryNov 2023
Make sure your rental company allows you to drive out of the area. Payless only lets you drive in SoCal, so I had to change to Thrifty at the last minute since I was doing a road trip to Colorado. Turn-in at San Diego is really easy for all rental agencies. The new car rental facility is really nice.
KathleenSept 2023
A little crazy compared to the midwest. Use navigation tools, with voice, and know that a slight right sometimes means a 360 degree turn. Also it will tell you to stay in the far right lane and 2 seconds later there are 2 new lanes on the right.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Park where you have plenty of room. My car was damaged in s hot and run while at a restaurant. Driving was fairly easy when using Google maps. Would not suggest going without proper map or directions.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Parking is limited in many areas and there may be charges for parking at hotels and restaurants, etc.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Make sure you don’t get charged over
Verified travelerOct 2023
Rent in advance and don't take no for an answer since most rental companies don't want to honour online rentals
MarkAug 2023
Driving in San Diego is difficult only in that freeway traffic signage comes up quickly as the road are curvy....especially if the older highways. USE GPS and listen to it. DO NOT text and drive.
SarahAug 2023
Choose a company at the rental center and not “offsite” to save yourself the headache. We rented a car from Fox after the Economy disaster and that went very smooth.
KatherineJul 2023
I was not driving during rush hour so it was very easy. The rental location is right next to the freeway so access was very easy.
Jeri LynJun 2023
We used our navigation, and we were able to find all of our destinations quickly and easily.
ThomasJun 2023
Driving in San Diego was not difficult, especially when we used our rental cars navigation system.
Verified travelerJun 2023
Spend the extra money and go with a bigger better company
Verified travelerAug 2023
Rent from sam diego airport location. Very well run
LauraJun 2023
Make sure you bring your itinerary and foreign driver’s licence even if you also have an American driver’s licence.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Uber drivers were quite competent, but since I got screwed over by Hertz, I can't answer this personally.
ChristinaJul 2023
Call the rental places about their deposit policies because neither this company nor kayak.com made that clear
TommyJul 2023
Stick with larger companies (ie Enterprise) and rent directly from the company and not a third party.
LeahAug 2023
Parking can be a challenge, and just like any other big city, traffic can be heavy.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Don’t follow the car in front of you too closely. Avoid rush hour.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Make sure it’s closer to San Diego airport not to CBX.
HerbAug 2023
Contact the rental counter as soon as you land / arrive
Verified travelerJul 2023
Typical large city driving. No special issues or problems.
LucasAug 2023
Try not to if you can
DwaineJun 2023
Just don't drive during rush hour.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Bring a car charger for phone
Tony NaroJul 2023
Parking near beaches is nightmare. Rent a spot before you go. SpotHero is good app for this.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Listen to the agent carefully as he tells you he has a larger car. Always ask how much more it will cost!
Verified travelerMay 2023
When filling gas tank, pull nozzle out when pump stops; then put nozzle back in and finish filling
Verified travelerMay 2023
Use the actual rental agency to book and not a third party.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Make sure you check the location before you travel
JoshuaMay 2023
Rent at the airport and not the office location

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in San Diego

  • Driving around San Diego is the most convenient and comfortable way of getting to know all corners of the region, as the freeway system is fairly easy to navigate and traffic is manageable (aside from during rush hour). Because public transportation services are unreliable in the city, staying mobile by renting a car is the best option. It is also ideal for travelers looking to explore other destinations outside the city, such as the wine country of nearby Temecula, or those who want to embark on a road trip along the California coast.
  • All the big car hire agencies can be found in the San Diego International Airport (SAN), at the Consolidated hire Car Center just outside the airport. The hire Car Center is accessible via free shuttle bus services that stop at all terminals.
  • Although the freeway system isn't generally complicated, always have a map or a GPS on hand to help you. When driving downtown, beware of tourists or other reckless drivers who may be too used to driving in the city. If you’re interested in hopping across the border to Mexico, make sure you talk to your hire agency, as they may need to provide specific documentation, such as car insurance that is also valid in the neighboring country. But if your plan includes a day trip to Tijuana, it's easier to just park your car on the U.S. side of the border and walk across.
  • Although traffic is manageable, roads are usually fairly busy throughout San Diego, so avoid rush hours both in the morning (between 6:30 and 10 a.m.) and afternoon (between 3:30 and 6:30 pm) if you don't want to be stuck in traffic for longer than needed. Freeways along the coast also get pretty packed on weekends, especially the I-5.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in San Diego for ₪109 or less
  • Medium rental cars in San Diego are around 28% cheaper than other car types, on average

Everything was good besides the poor directions I got for the drop off. There was just a note to return it in the San Jose, CA airport rental return building's address, 3rd level. That's it. When I arrived there was no budget sign anywhere and there was noone to ask because of out of working hours return. I didn't know where to leave the car. I called them but they didn't help. Finally I found the security guy who directed me to what to do but that's not his job that's Budget's job.

Front desk girl was not so friendly. Didn’t give clear instructions no paperwork was given she seemed like she didn’t want to be there. Asked for my drivers license and a card so I gave it to her. Then she gave me a #k6 didn’t know what that meant so I asked what it means she just looks at me like I’m dumb and says that’s where the car is parked…um ok so I went but I didn’t even get paperwork I didn’t sign anything. I was too tired to go back and ask because it was pretty late so I left.

Was given a clean Toyota Camry hybrid upgrade. However, the cruise control wasn’t working, and I had to travel a couple hundred miles each way between each of my destinations. Fortunately the gas pedal fit a notch between my shoe and part of the carpet. Otherwise great car.

I was unable to pickup my vehicle. Avis stated that vehicle was at a different location but my reservation was the correct one in my email. Avis would not honor the reservation I made with you. I tried contacting Kayak and I was unable to contact or get a hold of anyone to correct your mistake. I had to rent another vehicle with budget and it delayed my whole trip and added expenses I hadn’t planned for. I will not be using your company again.

The car itself was fine, but we got bullied into adding additional insurance when we picked it up. We didn’t need additional coverage since we already had 2 types of insurance but the lady at the counter refused to give us the car misrepresenting local law. We’ve rented cars multiple times in California from various vendors and we never had to add additional insurance. Very disappointing that they drove up the price and made us pay more than planned.

My flight was delayed and when I arrived, they could not find my reservation. They offered to rent me a car for the same period of time for $360 while my reservation was only $115. I refused the offer and went to costco.com to book a car to pick up 20 min after that for $156 with Budget. Never again with this company.

They didn’t have the vehicle we booked. We went to the first lot at the airport but realized we had to take a cab to a different hertz dealer. Then they didn’t have the correct vehicle. They were going to send us to a third hertz, but we ended up settling for a different vehicle.

My rental was not at the expected location. When I searched in Kayak, I searched for car rentals near the San Diego airport. Apparently there is a small municipal airport near the border with Tijuana and there is a Hertz car rental location there which came up in my search. Since I would not have expected this type of option to come up in my search parameters, I did not think there was a need to check the address of the rental location. A mistake I will never make again. However, I also will never be using Kayak or Hertz again. I will not be using Hertz mainly because the person at the rental counter in the actual San Diego airport location was not willing to help me other than to indicate that I was at the wrong location and that I should go to that other location if I would like my rental car.

ACTUAL charges were DOUBLE what was quoted online for booking the reservation. The “pick-up” at the airport required 1.5 hours of time, i.e. 6 phone calls to the rental car office, taking a bus to the Rental Car Center, then another car shuttle to the rental car office. Will be the LAST time I use their service

I told them that ld only rented a car once in my life, I'm 74, my family and friends don't rent cars. My car broke down and I needed transportation. I'd rented a car from a online service, maybe yours, from Fox rental car company for two days and they changed me $29.99 per day for insurance when I had my own and so did Economy which add up to over $500.00 that I didn't know that I didn't have to pay and none of the people helped. After I went back to the rental car companies and they said that after I returned the car there was nothing they could do. What the entire car booking and car rental companies can and should do is created information banners on all of the websites with simple information on how to navigate a car rental. But I understand why there isn't that banner. Dishonest, disceetful, amoral people wouldn't want one.

The car was pretty stained up between all the seats. I was required to pay additional collusion coverage even after I explained that I had purchased the one kayak offered. Still, I was made to purchase the basic coverage. That should be explicitly stated. Other car rentals I've used have not added any additional coverage as required.

The staff were good, no problems. The car I was given was the problem. It is the worst car I have driven in 40 years: noisy, poor visibility, sound system rudimentary. (Mitsubishi vehicle). All my friends and family and even on of their neighbors who walked by laughed and made derogatory comments when they saw me in it. Maybe it was bad luck? Who knows PS I drive a 12 year old VW so I am probably not a spoiled brat.

Kayak said it would be a Toyota RAV4 or similar when I made the reservation but when I went to pick up, they didn’t carry any Toyota’s and if I wanted something “similar” it would be considered an upgrade so I had to pay extra just to get what I thought I was already getting. Very frustrating and disappointed! Will never rent from Payless again!!!!

I felt like the woman who helped did ner best, even upgraded me, but then the car I was upgraded to was too large and she very sweetly got me the car I had planned. The biggest problem was logistics at SAN and the online arrangements. How to navigate the site around the pick up.

Beware! Their pickup location is so far that it took an hour to get to the rental counter. First a bus to the rental area, but since then a second pickup for which I waited 15 minutes. Definitely can't maximize. The car also was a cheaper non major brand with uncomfortable seats. The upside was the car didn't smell. If you're going to use an offsite (not at the airport rental section due to space limitations) I recommend NuCar (though check mileage) I used them before and they're friendlier. The problem is that on a short trip you lose an hour on pickup and need to plan to arrive at airport an hour earlier. I also felt this company had little flexibility (say to change the car if needed, that weren't time consuming) and confusing pickup systems. The counter guy read the policies clearly but fast like a robot.

U-Save Car Rental at San Diego Airport was a frustrating experience. Located off-site, it requires a shuttle pickup from the car rental center, but contacting them was nearly impossible. I called eight times, only to be routed through a confusing, multi-prompt system in LA. When I finally reached the San Diego line, it went to voicemail every time. No one answered, and I never got picked up. Forced to find another option, I rented from a different agency. Poor communication and unreliable service make U-Save a risky choice.

My experience was absolutely horrible. I showed up at Thrifty to pick up my rental car that I had already paid for in full. They advised me that they were out of rental cars for the night and to try someplace else. I told them I already paid for it and they told me "too bad". I was left scrambling and had to use Budget renal service and pay almost 4x the price on top of what I already paid. I've been trying to get ahold of someone to help but they keep pointing me in different directions.

I will never do business with Kayak or Dollar again! This was a total disaster. My rental confirmation said SAN (off-airport shuttle) with an address in San Diego. What it did not say is the address was 20 miles away and there would be no shuttle transportation to or from the pickup and drop off destination!!! I was on my own both ways, and, as it turned out at an extra expense of $180!!! In addition when I did pick the car up I was charged an extra $66 for a 'transit fee' that was not listed on my confirmation. The ordeal cost me time and money, was a violation of the implied contract with Kayak and Dollar, and completely misleading in the terms of that contract. I have rented many cars in many cities. There have often been from off-airport locations with a shuttle provided. NEVER has the location been miles and miles away with no actual transportation provided from the airport to the pick-up location!

I was told we would have a ford transit to fit my 6 individuals and all their luggage. I even called in advance with no answer. I was given a kia caravan and told it would fit us all. Obviously it did not. So I had to rent another vehicle but was asked ti return it to California. I couldn't do so because we we were flying out of Las Vegas. So not only did I pay extra for a 2nd vehicle I was charged nearly $230 for not returning it to California. Not happy at all and will be telling all my friends who travel often to not rent from you.

I liked NOTHING. Dollar (or Kayak) completely ignored my request for a car to be picked up in the San Diego Airport area with access to me after I arrived from my flight. Instead, never clearly explained or otherwise made possible, Dollar (or Kayak) chose to rent me a car to be picked up in some alleged place in San Diego that serves some airport in Mexico. When I arrived and took the shuttle from the Airport to the Dollar location, I found a long line of customers and over the next 45 minutes in line watched and discovered that the Dollar agents were trying mercilessly to scam customers into purchasing different cars or pay for extras they did not need. The agents were few in number in low in abilities. No goodwill or effect to truly help customers (many who appeared to leave without a car, all of whom were upset with the service). One agent during the process mentally broke down and left. Others ran off for breaks. When my turn came, I was told they had no reservation for me, and no cars to give me, in any event. When I gave them the number of my reservation, they simply said that was in another office. I asked if there was anything they could do or recommend -- the answer was No. As I left, the agent serving me made a general announcement to the long line of customers that Dollay was not honoring any of the reservations made the day before (whatever that meant). I left with no car and had to take a taxi to my destination, at a cost of $100. Needless to say, I will not again attempt to rent any car from Dollar (or Thrifty) and I will not seek Kayak's assistance in renting cars, likely anything else. The worst service I have every received in my long life.

I had a terrible experience. I arrived at 8 AM, their posted opening time, to return my rental, but no employees were there and the gates stayed locked until around 8:30 AM. The shuttles didn’t start until after 9 AM, leaving several customers stranded and causing us to be over an hour late to the airport. I had to pay for an Uber to avoid missing my flight. Their two shuttle system is also extremely time consuming and can take over two hours. I was charged $30/day for a protection plan despite being told I couldn’t decline it, and the charge was applied again after I returned the vehicle. Getting help was nearly impossible because their phone lines all automated and don’t connect to representatives and their listed emails were invalid as well. Felt very shady and extremely unprofessional truly terrible experience.

I pre-paid but when I got the car they forced an upgrade claiming there weren’t any other options. So I had to pay more upon pickup even the I reduced the amount of time I needed the car from 2 days to only 1 day. Ultimately it became I really over priced rental. The customer service wasn’t great either. Took a long time to pick up and drop off. This rental car isn’t at the rental car center either so expect a lot of waiting around for transportation. I wouldn’t rent from here again.

I probably didn't read the correspondence carefully. My drivers license wasn't sufficient ID and they required a second form of ID. If I hadn't had one on me I would have had to go to another counter to rent. You should make that requirement in BOLD print so I can't skim past it.

Europcar is actually Fox Rental. The agent at the check in counter was not able to explain why I had to answer certain questions (got example why was being asked to sing to confirm I have not taken an airport shuttle to get to their office). I've also asked for no insurance extras to be added. After dropping off the car I've realized they've added LDW and LRP optional insurance. I have a feeling I will never see these refunded, despite having asked for no extras at pick up. Just another zero transparency car rental company. The car was dirty on the inside, full of crumbs, a half empty bottle and napkins. The drop off process was quick however and someone assisted me right away. They location of the drop off is not too far from the escalator to the terminal shuttle.

Waiting almost an hour at pick up of the car, not given much information. Still waiting for deposit return weeks later.

I like their process but it would be better if their location at the airport with the other rental car it will be a little more convenient but other than that everything is good to enjoy it

Discovered that roaches and small bugs were in the vehicle inside the frame of the car. Wasn’t taken seriously by company when brought up and still claimed the car was clean instead of looking into it.

I was not even able to get the car. It was not at the airport location as it appeared, there was no contact number to reach a person and so i just had to let it go and hope that i could be reimbursed by my credit card company. I had to pay more and go through a different rental company that was in site. I would never recommend using priceless to anyonw

Horrible!! They told me the car was not available after we arrived at the airport and were waiting for our rental car. I called multiple times and they stopped answering my calls. I will never book a car with priceless again. Kayak, you should not advertise for priceless.

Canceled my reservation with very short notice. Why allow booking if you don’t have the cars. Had to scramble last minute.
