Cons:

It wasn’t our fault at all. I believe somebody tried to break into the car during our stay and they scratched a little the top and the door. We didn’t notice until we returned the car. But Europcar charged us 430 euro for this.

Car was as advertised. Very clean and free of debris or concerns. Access tot he vehicle at both pick up and drop off was simple and clear. Check in was the only hurdle with inefficiencies in preparation and service.

Just listen to the representative when they tell you to get an automatic when renting on Madeira. I have driven a manual all my life and have when in other European countries. This island driving is like no other. It was 7 euros more a day. But worth it. Marc

Its possibly the worse experience with a car rental company ever - all I need to do its suggest you go look at the trust pilot reviews (which I wish I had), they will scam you out of money for insurance you dont need but your not allowed to take the car unless you take their insurance - even thou I had my own....the staff are just plain rude - I asked them how many times a day they "screw over" the customer - and they said - quite a few!! and thats before the car - "cleaned" not a chance!! it was a disgrace - it would be better off on a scrap heap! and to top it all off - conviencently as you full the tank the petrol gauge on "this type of vehicle" does quite go to the top - so you look like you havent filled it....I seen 2 people arguing this point for the Peugeots they had.....absolute disgrace - stay so far clear its untrue.

Pros:

The car was clean and once we had sorted out the upgrade pick up was straight forward.

Cons:

We were told that the car we had booked wasn't suitable for driving in Madeira. We paid to upgrade but felt we had been duped. We also were told that it was better to pay for fuel upfront rather than return the car with a full tank as it was difficult to find fuel nearby. There is a petrol station just by the airport. We only used half a tank!

Don’t deal with Sixt. They are a money hungry company that takes advantage of the fact thag their customers have flights to catch when dropping of the car. They will charge unfair and unnecessary fees and make you sign for them because they know you don’t have the time to argue it. They made the drop off an extremely anxiety driving experience. Avoid.

My flight was delayed, was 3 hours late for pick up. They told me it was too late and I could still have the car, but I would have to pay an additional $200 which is half again of the total pre paid. Told them forget it. Immediately call my credit card and stopped payment. Terrible experience and a scam. Stay away from Surprice.

Though Madeira’s public transport system is well-organised, if you want to venture out of the urban areas and explore the beautiful scenery then having your own car helps immensely. Recent upgrade work and engineered tunnels that go through the island’s iconic mountainous terrain have ensured roads are safe, secure and easy to drive on.
  • Once you’ve hired your car at Madeira Airport, the best option to get on your way and onto your next destination is via the VR1 motorway. The road runs alongside the airport terminal and is easily accessible from the rental car parks. If you’re staying in Madeira’s capital, Funchal, then the drive is only around 13 miles from the airport, which is about a 20-min drive. Alternatively, you could take the same road north and towards smaller coastal areas and towns such as Machico and Canical, which are about a 10-min and 20-min drive away.
