We had cut our trip shorter by four days and the price quoted changed very little. When I questioned this I was told because I HAD to purchase additional insurance on the car we were driving. Also, our flight left before the dealer opened so I was told I had to leave the car at the airport, but not where at the airport. There are no signs or public parking lots around the airport so I drove around asking people where to leave it at 4:00 am in the morning, but no one knew. I finally took it to Payless and parked it in the front and took an Uber back to the airport. It was a real hassle.

The staff was friendlier than most car rentals I have experienced at SJO. However, the car was pretty beaten up, though it ran okay. And, they told me the car had 3/8 of a tank of gas when it was closer to 1/4, but the contract said it had 3/4. I brought it back with 5/8 and they honored what they had said about 3/8, but it still cost me extra in gas, just to be sure.

This car was pretty beaten up and probably shouldn't be rented. Also, be more careful about gas levels.

The car was fine, but I left feeling like I was scammed. I had to pay for Liability insurance, which I was prepared for, but Europcar’s cost for this was twice as much as other rental places for no reason. And they wouldn’t accept my credit card’s CDW coverage (a first) and made me pay for that as well. Overall, it more than doubled the cost of the rental de me. A nasty surprise at the counter, but at that point, they know they’ve got you. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

We take a Toyota hatchback, overall was great regarding the fuel economy, the cleaning inside and out, but the seats are so hard that for 3 days of driving we have to use a pillow.

Absolutely no pressure for upgrading or anything else when I checked in. Very friendly staff & couldn't have asked more.

Cons:

There seemed to be a miscalculation with the airport tax. I'd recommend really looking at the paperwork before you pay. For me, it was a little over $10 difference, but for others with a more expensive rental, may be much more. GOOD thing is that they were more interested in figuring it out than with arguing with me. Did not get to the bottom of it, but they did offer me a discount for a second driver that made it about even.

The staff was friendly and helpful. The car had an unbalanced wheel, causing shudder, but at an Alamo office the car was replaced in less than 30 minutes and the journey continued without technical problems.

Cons:

The light of the back compartment was constantly on due to the faulty door switch, resulting to a dead battery during a one week long parking.

Pros:

10/10 would reccomend the Alamo in Belen near the San Jose Airport. Customer service was amazing, staff was super friendly and helpful, and facilities and cars are clean and well-maintained. We upgraded for a small extra amount per day and were so thrilled with our vehicle (Toyota Fortuner). Upon returning our car to Alamo at the end of our trip, we had no wait at all before our car was checked out, receipt confirmed, and our friendly driver dropped us off at the airport. Will absolutely be return customers for our next trip.

Luis in Tamarindo was great! I rented I San Jose and told them I needed to drop it in Tamarindo and then get back to town where I was staying. San Jose didn't let me know that there was a location in town and instead had me driving 1.4hrs to the airport. Luis worked things out and didn't even charge me an extra drop off fee since i only used ¼ tank of gas. Aldo San Jose said I would need a full tank of gas and charged me for that. All worked in the end , thanks to Luis.

The entire process was excellent. I've forgotten his name, but the Enterprise Manager at the San Jose Airport had me on the road in short order. Gabriel Vasquez, the Enterprise Manager in Belen, CR was instrumental in writing an extended contract for for our car and getting us back on the road in very short order. I'M A VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER TO DATE!

The SUV we rented was great.

Cons:

The price we were quoted online was very deceiving. We were quoted a little over $100 online. However when we got to pick our vehicle up, even with the cheapest insurance, we paid well over $1000. The price needs to be more transparent when you book online. Once you arrive in a foreign country and need a car to get around, you really have no choice but to pay. Very disappointed that the amount quoted was so inaccurate.

When I arrived at the counter to pick up the car I was told purchasing the rental car's insurance was NOT optional, I had to purchase one of two plans, otherwise they would not rent the car to me. If the insurance was not optional, then it should have been shown in the original price of renting the car. A definite bait & switch which I didn't appreciate. $300 for the car, $250 for the insurance, kind of changes the value of the rental.

We had rental vehicles for 3 month stay in CR. Initially rented a small 4WD vehicle for wife and me, then traded for larger 4WD when 3 more family members arrived. Staff at main office made exchange smooth. Subsequently had some issues with the battery-controlled key device (for locking/unlocking doors), but office staff provided a replacement immediately and without question. While we never really needed 4WD (even while fording couple of shallow streams), high clearance was helpful on poorly maintained dirt roads. Whatsapp communication on several occasions with Jorge, my primary contact in main office, was quick and efficient. Senior agent provided his direct phone number to facilitate future rentals if we return. I strongly recommend this organization.

Picking up was very easy! They had my reservation and drove me to their offsite location. The car was waiting for me, I signed some papers and was off! Flopping off was a nightmare, but it want their fault. The road was blocked in both directions, so there was literally no way of getting the car rental back to the rental place. We attempted from one direction and that was 100% impassible. To come at it from the other direction, we needed to go on a toll road and then make a U-turn. When we approached where the rental place should be, that section of the road was closed, too!! I had to park by the barricades (impeding traffic) and walk down the street to ask them what I should do. They told me I needed to move the construction barricades and drive the vehicle down the closed road. There was literally no way of getting to the drop off point without moving barricades. Luckily, we were very early for our flight, so we had time, but I was a little worried for a while, because I had no idea where to take the car.

Personnel at San Jose office was rude! He was upselling the car insurance which I told him isn’t necessary as we have coverage through Chase Sapphire Reserve which is the credit card I used to book reservations. He was unhappy that we declined the insurance and was very rude from then on. It was a real sad first impression of Costa Rica citizens.

Only real thing I liked was how close it was to the airport and there being a shuttle. Otherwise, the first challenge was the insurance up sale. I purchased insurance during booking but then still had to purchase more insurance upon arrival. The first car I rented had such a small engine we had to return it. Then the second SUV was quite dirty and we could not connect the phone to it and while figuring that out the battery died. So, on the spot they had to replace the battery. Grateful they did then but imagine if we had drove off into the 4 hours drive ahead of us without a new battery? Basically, super mediocre if not sub par service.

Be prepared to be taken advantage of. No matter if you have extremely good insurance through your credit card company these guys will try their absolute hardest to force the company insurance on you for an extra $40 a day. Windshield got cracked by a rock on the road and they took $1100 out of the $3000 deposit, $1100 to replace a windshield?? Get real. To top it all off they charged me $120 American to fill half the tank upon return. It’s standard practice with rental agencies to have an increased gas fee if they have to fill it upon return. But this is on a different level, not to mention I know this guy was just making up numbers in his head as I was able to haggle the price down to $120. He also insisted I pay him in USD with no explanation and eventually took payment in colones. Sketchy business practices at this establishment, beware.

So the garage tried to charge me a $2500 deductible straight off of my credit card and then I told him that that was not discussed prior to him trying to charge it and I said hey there was a guy at the airport that told me he could do it for $300 deductible and 350 for the week and so then he said OK I can match that point being negotiation is definitely required with This company. Whatever they offer you lowball them and they will probably meet your offer. Hope this helps. I will say the comfortable car and reliable in the mountains. They provided was really good. It was called vGV

On arrival at San Jose, the representative told me that I was 2 hours late and they had rented my car to someone else. When I asked for my deposit back they refused. They were rude and threatening. I spoke to their manager by phone and he was dismissive. I have not yet received my deposit.

There was no shuttle from the airport. They didn’t answer our phone calls or emails and when we finally got to the rental car place they did not have a car for us. I will never use this company again. They also stop charged us the full amount. What a scam!

There was a minor scratch at the bottom of the front bumper which is not visible unless you are on your knees. As far as I am concerned we didn’t do anything to cause it. It may be already there and we didn’t notice when we took the care at midnight. At any rate my gripe is with how they handled this situation. We bought most expensive coverage possible with them which is twice the rental price itself. But during checkout they stalled us because of this issue even though we told them that we are cutting too close to our departure time and requested them to call the insurance and get it reimbursed because we already bought the coverage. But they insisted on us calling them and we couldn’t because we didn’t have local mobile plan. After lot of back and forth they checked other contracts on the vehicle and probably figured out that the damage was already there and the let us off the hook. It was a happy ending but the whole drama could have been avoided if they had customer service at the forefront of their minds.

We had prebooked and paid for 5 days. Upon pickup We were made to purchase an extra $350.00 Insurance policy to get the car with a $400.00 security hold aswell even though I had purchased insurance with my trip and paid for the rental. Even if you have insurance with credit card, they then do a $3,000 deposit hold and still charged 250.00 for 5 days. Please be careful with this company here. Would not use them again.

This was the worst customer service experience I’ve ever had. I paid $425 online for the rental, and we chose this company as it was the best price. It took us over 2 1/2 hours to rent a car, including waiting, over 30 minutes at an empty desk for someone to show up for the shuttle, another 30 minutes then waiting for the shuttle to actually arrive, and then an hour and a half in line to rent the car. We left our house at 4 AM, and had already been traveling for 8 hours that day with a 3 hour drive ahead of us, so this was a very unwelcome delay. And this wasn’t even the worst of it. There are other costs and insurances Nu requires you to buy that you cannot decline and they do not tell you about until you’ve already been waiting for over two hours to rent the car. Even if you already have insurance covered elsewhere, you are still required to pay an amount that ends up totaling more than the initial amount you paid. We had to end up paying $1100 total and having a $3000 hold put on our credit card. To be charged almost 3X the original booking amount was astonishing and quite honestly very dishonest and a disgusting business practice. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!

Buyer Beware - Read the insurance information to avoid a nasty surprise at the counter. My main complaint was that this provider should CLEARLY up front make buyer aware there will be another $USD1300 insurance coverage charge to rent in Costa Rica. I watched three other parties react in shock when informed of this charge over and above the booking rental price. Here is the no so clear policy buried in their on-line disclosures; Insurance information Renter is responsible for damage to the rental vehicle. We offer CDW - Collision Damage Waiver with a deductible of 900.00 - 5000.00USD, see detail below. The Renter may decline CDW and use credit card or insurance policy by presenting written proof of coverage with type of vehicle covered-amt of coverage valid during dates of rental and 3000USD deposit. 5000USD deposit for theft any car. If CDW is declined purchase of SLI-Z, 100 percent liability coverage, is required. Renter pays all rental vehicle damage. 3rd Party Ins and credit card coverage REIMBURSE you for damages to our vehicle. All damages must be paid by the renter in full prior to leaving Costa Rica. You can file for reimbursement from your provider-presenting necessary documents. Vehicles carrying more than 7 passengers cannot decline CDW. Third Party Liability- SLI is mandatory in case of an accident with a third party. The renter is responsible for 20 percent of the total damage and the company pays 80 percent. If the renter declines CDW then SLI-Z will be mandatory and the Company pays 100 percent of the liability damages. The security deposit will be 900-1600USD depending on rented vehicle. Had to return the first car like the front was gonna fall off exchange it. The next day upgrade was not much better. Told the attendant that I would bring it back on Tuesday, April 30 by 9 AM the original contract was for 22 April through 29 April and again I told the attendant that my flight was on the 30th so I have a receipt showing that and now they’re trying to charge me for an extra day so I probably would never do business with priceless again thank you

Pickup and drop off went well. The car itself needed maintenance, the brakes were worn out, wobbled the vehicle when braking hard, which was critical down the many many hills. The car also shivered over 100kmh. Had about 50k miles on it, but given the roads in Costa Rica those were hard miles.

I prepaid $700 for my rental car on line understanding that I would have a pay for insurance. Estimates from my guidebook indicated that it would be $10-$30 per day for a 9 day trip. When I arrived I was charged $825 or $90 per day for insurance alone. I had prepaid so I couldn’t change car companies and felt cheated. I was told I should have read the fine print. If that is the policy, it should be made very clear the the cost of insurance will exceed the cost of the rental.

I'm unclear as to why my kayak booking price and hertz rental end price were so drastically different. My reservation and Kayak price was close to $400 and my final booking were nothing changed was almost $1000. Just didn't make sense and hertz didn't honor the kayak price and I still can't figure out if i paid twice.

Everything about the car was fine. The pick up took a little longer than I would like. The major problem was the hidden fees. Mandatory renter's insurance. An online reservation for a $180 dollar rental turned into a $400 rental. The charge for refilling the tank was $98 plus the cost of gas.

Hertz insisted that we pay more than the quoted amount, and told us we needed a letter from our insurance company which we were not informed of until we arrived at the rental office. So instead of the rental being the quoted amount of $480.25 CAD, they insisted that we pay $750 USD and provide a letter from my credit card company proving that our card covered insurance on a rental. When I showed the Hertz agent the booking through Kayak he just kept repeating "I work for Hertz, not Kayak" and showing me the Hertz agreement on their website. When I showed him the RBC credit care website outlining the details of our credit card (showing that rental insurance was covered), he say he needed a letter from our credit card company. All my other interactions with Kayak have been great, but this was an awful experience, and we ended up paying significantly more for a rental than the amount Kayak had quoted us.

Price was not what was expected. Got hassled into a specific coverage once arrived in Costa Rica. Paid for the extra rental coverage at checkout to avoid issues. Was told by rental company that the insurance I purchased was not proper coverage and was a waste of money. My price for rental was supposed to be 213$ probably some taxes and fees to be expected, but in order to walk out with a car I had to pay 666$. Not entirely a great way to start a trip.

I couldn’t get my money back from them. They said there was nothing they could do. I should have read these reviews on this company before. I normally do and of course when I slacked, I had the worst experience with a rental company of my life. I paid for 2 weeks rental and never even took a car. Total scam!

It was a complete scam. We were quoted a price and I even paid extra for an insurance plan. The van to the rental place was so hard to find at the airport. The guy gave us a tiny beat up car and said the only way we could take it was to pay for his car insurance. It was midnight and we had nowhere to go. He showed us a paper that he had written the different prices which seemed sketchy. We could pay like $590 and a $3000 deposit or like $500 and a $500 deposit. I told him I already purchased insurance and he said that doesn’t matter. We finally paid to get the heck out of there and the locks on the car didn’t work, the trunk was impossible to shut, the key clicker didn’t work, it was a piece of junk. We had to go up a hill on our drive on a regular road and the car gave out and couldn’t even make it up a hill. We were so happy to get rid of that car at the end of our trip. When we pulled up to drop it off no one was in the office and finally a guy came out in such a bad mood. Definitely never going back there.

Awful. They FORCE you to buy $300 insurance. It is not optional and it is not given back to you. They don’t tell you anywhere on the website. We didn’t find out until we showed up. We even bought insurance and the website ($65) and they said it ‘didn’t count’ and you need to purchase theirs. Awful experience. $80 turned into $380 for a rental car.

Wow. Tomas' customer service is unrivalled. What a genuinely kind, caring, and friendly man. He had picked us up from the airport holding up a sign with my name, and proceeded to drive us to the office in town. Along the way, he talked to us about all the fun places to explore, food recommendations, and some local history. When we got to the office, the car and contract were already waiting. Everything that was stated online was what the contract stated in person. The best part? No hidden fees! I opted to get the premium insurance, so for 12 days the car rental cost me $400 USD total. They also held a 300$ deposit which is completely standard practice. Tomas took the time to explain everything in detail, even going as far as providing us his personal number in case of any issues. When we went to inspect the car, he actually used a light to see any existing damage and spent the time explaining to us everything in the car. People like Tomas are seldomly found, where not only are they a good businessman, they are also genuinely a kind human. I would highly recommend easy way rent a car, especially if you want a painless rental experience!

I was told online my price would be $277. I get there and they charge me $530. They initially give me a car that brakes don’t work and my husband wrecks into a car in front of us. They show no remorse although the situation could have ended much worse (I.e wreck on the highway going 70mph). They bring us another car but it’s the exact same brand- we still feel very uncomfortable about the brake situation so we ask for a different type of car and they just give a hard no. Zero remorse. Deceiving prices and little remorse or attempt to make the situation right make this a poor experience.

When we were quoted for the price it was $34 total for 6 days. However, when we arrived we were told there was an obligatory insurance we needed to get (in-spite of my credit card having an international plan). The price quickly changes from the quoted $34 dollars (which supposedly included taxes and fees) to $300. We ended up paying an extra $50 more for the full insurance (since we were worried what they would try to charge us for if anything at all happened) so it came to $350. When we asked why it changed so drastically they said that it was because of the extra fees and taxes (which the website had said were included.) I had originally picked a Jeep but the confirmation email was for an SUV instead (So that was strange). When we got the Jeep it had no gps or even a usb charging port . When we asked about this the man told us he should go by Walmart in order to get one for the car. When we complained he said that they didn’t have any other cars and then finally offered us a carport charger that he had that we could borrow. When we left the seatbelt light turned on and wouldn’t stop beeping (even though we had our seatbelts on.) finally we had to turn around and return the car. We also realized there wasn’t even a middle seatbelt in the back of the car. They miraculously had a different car for us then. Overall- not a good experience. Would NOT recommend. We do speak Spanish as well fluently so it wasn’t like anything but was “lost in translation.”

I have a printed confirmation from you for $110.00. In fairness it does read estimated taxes and fees $57.12. Confirmation # CRF8702737. After paying for a shuttle to the isolated offsite I was told the rental was $450.00 no negotiation and he kept pointing to the estimated taxes and fees. Extremely deceptive business practice. While Adolfo in customer service was very good and resolved my issue I would highly reccomend these deceptive business practices and disclose to your customers what the actual fees will really be.

Have travelled often but never experienced such a scam. We were told they had no cars when we arrived and there were none available anywhere. After an hour of pleading they somehow got us a car as it was a huge favor and it ended up being the same Toyota Landcruiser Prado which I had reserved 2 months earlier but at twice the cost. Have never been taken advantage of like this.

The "Firefly" at San Jose for us was basically just Hertz. They shared a counter at the airport, and the actual rental place was Hertz. There was a Firefly counter in a corner of the waiting room...with no one there. The Hertz guys took care of us. Felt like kind of a bait and switch but Hertz is a more reputable company, so we didn't mind.

The car Rental experience was mediocre however it took an hour to do paper work. The site is not straight forward with fees. I asked for a different location drop off quote, and once I was at the rental place they charge $50.00 extra. Furthermore they won’t take the insurance protection provided by the credit card unless you bring a letter from the credit card stating that. So beware, a $40.00 dollars par day rent turns out to be over a $100.00 per day. What can you do better, so you ask? LET CUSTOMERS KNOW UPFRONT OF HIDDEN FEES, SO THYE CAN MAKE AN INFORMED DECISION. (I am not intending to yell by using capital letters, I am just trying to help you do better)
