This was a complete surprise and about doubled the cost of my rental car. Also, the Alamo office next to San Juan International Airpirt was VERY difficult to find. The car we got was exactly as described online and worked great for our needs. The people we met at the Alamo location in Libera for pick up and in San Jose for drop off were very helpful and extremely accommodating with providing maps and recommendations.Cons:
The rate we were quoted online was vastly different from the end price we paid. When we made our reservation online the price was around $150 for our full reservation and once we arrived at the airport in Liberia to pick up the car we were quoted 3 price options that we could choose from ranging from $450 - $660 depending on the insurance coverage we wanted. If we went with the $450 option the car rental location would put a $1,000 hold on our card that would not be lifted for at least 7 business days after we returned the car (and left the country!). We did not feel in any way comfortable with this option and the only way to not have the hold placed on our card was to go with the $660 option, so we did. At the time of pick up we were told these were required insurances/fees put in place by the country of Costa Rica that we had to pay in order to rent the car. At this point, had just traveled 10+ hours, were in a foreign country and had no other means of transportation for the duration of our vacation so had to accept the fees. In my opinion, it was still not an unreasonable total fee for the time we had the car; however, it was extremely misleading to be quoted one price online for our confirmed reservation and then required to pay another upon arrival. I suggest that if possible, this should be rectified so travelers aren't caught off guard in the future.6.0 Okay

Alamo has a desk in the airport and a quick shuttle that takes you to the offsite location where the cars are. It's about a 5 min drive in the shuttle. Quick drop off when you're leaving and quick shuttle back to the airport.Cons:
The required insurance. I bought insurance from Kayak assuming this was in conjunction with Alamo. It was not. I was required by Alamo to either put a $2500 deposit on my credit card or pay $500 for insurance for the week. I was not allowed to cancel my insurance through Kayak either.Avis

Kayak sold us the rental and insurance for one price and when we got there it was more then double we are so upset about the drastic cost difference we didn't figure that cost and it affected are whole vacation. Kayak should be more aware of the outside country costs and that you can't buy USA insurance for an out of country car! The rate that we were given was not the rate that they made us pay. We paid for the extra insurance when we booked online and when we got to Avis they said that they wouldn't take that insurance, even after we showed proof of it. We rented the car with our credit card that also had insurance, but they made us pay $29 extra per day in insurance. They said that was the basic rate and wouldn't let us take the car without it. So we paid for insurance twice. We watched as they did it to the guy who came behind us too. We researched it and we had the right to refuse but then they had the right to refuse our rental. We were in the country with kids and couldn't be stuck without a car so they had us in a catch 22. We paid the extra money, but for a 7 day rental it was nearly twice the original amount. We rent yearly in Costa Rica, and never had this happen. Will never use Avis in Costa Rica again.2.0 Poor

Our plane arrived in Liberia, Costa Rica at around the time we had informed the agency. When we came in front, there were numerous vendors holding signs from the other car agencies, but no one from Payless. More than one of those vendors called Payless for us but no one answered. One of the vendors had an office near Payless and they told us that no one was in that office. We had to rent a different car.10.0 Wonderful

The "Large SUV" (a Suzuki Grand Vitara) met my needs perfectly although I originally got a smaller vehicle not realizing how small it was going to be. I asked if I could get a manual transmission and they did that for me too, which was great. The SUV performed great on dirt roads along the Guanacaste coastal region.Cons:

By the time we arrived to Hertz in Costa Rica, we already purchased an insurance policy via Allianz, a reputable company that we have used for medical coverage as well. Hertz would not accept this policy and forced us to purchase their own at a higher value. From $99 to $245 dollars. Beware - The counter reps will try to sell you the prepaid petrol, stating it is cheaper at Budget than at petrol stations. This is not true. Also decline the damage insurance even if they claim it is 'mandatory'. They're running a scam at this location. The San Jose location clearly advertises that you can decline the insurance if your credit card covers rental insurance - just make sure to have a document from your credit card company (all it takes is a quick phone call) clearly stating that your rental will be covered in Costa Rica.6.0 Okay

The car itself was fine, I got the exact model I reserved, aside from a couple dings was in very good shape and fairly low mileage. Airport transfer was easy enough, they pick-up curbside and didn't keep me waiting very long.Cons:
Aggressively try to upsell you on their insurance plans. Keep in mind, Costa Rica DOES have some fairly strict liability insurance requirements for rental cars. That said, I know the laws in CR and had purchased a full zero-liability insurance policy for my trip. At the time of pick-up, they "maneuvered" their figures when trying to get me to use their insurance plan, which was shady from the get go. My biggest issue was that they DID end up changing me for $78 in insurance (and several other fees) without my permission! I am currently contesting the charge with AMEX, but I ended up being charged over $100 more than the quote from Kayak, without my permission. Shop elsewhere.10.0 Wonderful

The vehicle was exactly what was advertised. It was a Diahatsu Bego, automatic, all wheel drive, with no bells or whistles. Despite the worst roads I had ever driven on (Monteverde), the vehicle ran like a champ. I was very nervous about check in and check out. We took video of the SUV at checkout. The return was very smooth. They had many vehicles to check in so I'm glad we arrived early.Cons:
We used our credit card for collision and paid bought the mandatory liability through National. They insisted it was $24/day (required), when I was told over the phone $12/day. Only when I told him this did he show the options for the two. Ultimately we did go with the 0 deductible $24/day over the 80/20 liability.8.0 Very good

Kayak- is a good rental place, the only issue was the car on the picture (Toyota RAV 4) is the bigger modle than the one offered (Daihatsu Terios). I must admit, this is confusing, so upon arrival we had to upgrade. (5-people and luggage) For people who want to rent cars to travel Costa Rica!!!!!! Just rent the car and get the insurance locally. Allianz Travel Insurance policy - One receives an offer for a travel insurance policy from a renown company, this is a scam. This insurance policy is not valid in Costa Rica. Third party insurances are not accepted in Costa Rica. I dont understand why this happens in 2017 and why Kayak does not mention this. Please find attached a copy of my mail to Allianz who have not responded so far and to file a claim as we all know becomes more and more difficutl to put people off to file claims. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Upon arrival in Costa Rica I was deeply alarmed and shocked that this kind of scam still exists. This was a rather negative start to the awaited holiday. It gives the country a negative touch, although you are the ones that should know better and are responsible. When I made my online reservation for a vehicle in Liberia, Costa Rica I was quoted a rate of $112 USD. I also checked with my credit card company to verify that I was covered for insurance, liability and collision, when using my credit card as the payment form for the transaction. When checking in to pick up my vehicle at the Liberia Thrifty location I was told that the government of Costa Rica requires renters to purchase this insurance which more than tripled my rental price from the quoted $112 to $375!!! No where on the online reservation site was there any mention of the required insurance coverage or the outrageous cost of this coverage!
