Great experienceThe staff are so kind and helpful. We have only had great experiences with Alamo and this was no different. Easy pickup and drop off.The vehicle was on the older side and had an after market radio which didn't work all that well. Not a big deal though

Read the fine printRelatively cheap Staff was helpful Upgraded for minimum ($5 a day) chargeI wasn't told I needed 3rd party car insurance in Costa Rica (not just collision insurance; apparently it's the law) until I was at the Alamo office trying to pick up my car. This was a complete surprise and about doubled the cost of my rental car. Also, the Alamo office next to San Juan International Airpirt was VERY difficult to find. We spent about an hour driving around and talked to 3 different professionals (and got 3 different locations).

Rate quoted online is not correct! The car we got was exactly as described online and worked great for our needs. The people we met at the Alamo location in Libera for pick up and in San Jose for drop off were very helpful and extremely accommodating with providing maps and recommendations. The rate we were quoted online was vastly different from the end price we paid. When we made our reservation online the price was around $150 for our full reservation and once we arrived at the airport in Liberia to pick up the car we were quoted 3 price options that we could choose from ranging from $450 - $660 depending on the insurance coverage we wanted. If we went with the $450 option the car rental location would put a $1,000 hold on our card that would not be lifted for at least 7 business days after we returned the car (and left the country!). We did not feel in any way comfortable with this option and the only way to not have the hold placed on our card was to go with the $660 option, so we did. At the time of pick up we were told these were required insurances/fees put in place by the country of Costa Rica that we had to pay in order to rent the car. At this point, had just traveled 10+ hours, were in a foreign country and had no other means of transportation for the duration of our vacation so had to accept the fees. In my opinion, it was still not an unreasonable total fee for the time we had the car; however, it was extremely misleading to be quoted one price online for our confirmed reservation and then required to pay another upon arrival. I suggest that if possible, this should be rectified so travelers aren't caught off guard in the future.

Don't buy insurance from Kayak!Alamo has a desk in the airport and a quick shuttle that takes you to the offsite location where the cars are. It's about a 5 min drive in the shuttle. Quick drop off when you're leaving and quick shuttle back to the airport. The required insurance. I bought insurance from Kayak assuming this was in conjunction with Alamo. It was not. I was required by Alamo to either put a $2500 deposit on my credit card or pay $500 for insurance for the week. I was not allowed to cancel my insurance through Kayak either.

Overall experience was good, got the car we requested, all equipment worked wellPick-up time at the airport going to off-site rental was delayed for quite some time. Also, although price on Kayak was very low, once fees and insurance were added, price was significantly higher.

Car worked fine and handled the rough roads well. The pickup took about an hour even though there was no line. Just really slow. The agent told me that I had to buy insurance coverage for liability, which nearly doubled the total price. If he is right that this is required, there should be a clearer warning when the booking is made online. Even with this insurance, the price was good by U.S. standards, but it was an unpleasant surprise upon arrival.

They have worn out dangerous vehicles. I had a very serious incident on a mountain road due a steering component failure that was a direct result of poor maintenance. In addition, the passenger seat was not secured properly to the floor. The dealer would not give me the car unless I bought exorbitantly priced insurance from him, in spite of me showing him proof that I was covered through my credit card. I consider their behaviour to be criminal and I would never rent from this company again.

Wish I knew about the mandatory insurance policy in Costa Rica. That was my only surprise.

I'm just getting back from my trip to Costa Rica. I was there for two weeks. As you can see we paid about 1.1k for the car for two weeks. When we got there we were told actually the insurence we had was only for our car, we did not have insurence for someone hitting us. From then, the car prices were 1.5k with a 3k hold to 2k with a 300 dollar hold. The car was so old it asked my to connect my iPod. Theres no reason anyone should ever trust the price on here or rent through Payless Car Rental ever.

The rental was not available upon arrival. Got a hold of rental agency at airport and they claimed that they never received the reservation.

Bait and switch; old car in poor shape and would not rent unless I took their expensive insurance despite having Allianz insurance. They said take it or leave it. The parting shot was “maybe you should rent directly from Payless not through internet providers.” Beware.

The price reported on the app was different than the final charges. In Costa Rica you must have insurance coverage that almost doubled the cost of the rental. You can’t use your credit card for this coverage, so we ended up paying more for our rental than if we had just booked with a local company, but didn’t have a chance to accurately compare rates because we weren’t aware that we were going to have to pay the additional amount. On top of that our A/C would cut out when it was very hot (when you need it most).

Scam in Costa ricaCar cost 3.5 times my confirmed rate. They tried to charge me 5.5 and I said that's enough. Most of money extra was insurance and additional add ons such as license charge. Never had this experience before. Very low class!

Employees lost our luggageGreat car for price and seasonAn employee loaded our luggage into another customers car that left with our stuff. It was really tough on us because we were traveling with infant and made our first day a looooooong nightmare. They did help in tracking down our luggage, but it was up to us to make arrangement to to meet up with that customer and go pick up our luggage.

The people were friendly and (thankfully) spoke English. The "Large SUV" (a Suzuki Grand Vitara) met my needs perfectly although I originally got a smaller vehicle not realizing how small it was going to be. I asked if I could get a manual transmission and they did that for me too, which was great. The SUV performed great on dirt roads along the Guanacaste coastal region.I opted out of insurance when I booked it, and that was probably a mistake. I think it was a lot cheaper if I had booked it online, and without this I had to buy there and it was almost twice the price of the car. That SUCKED.

Beware of uncharges and shady additionsThe car itself was fine, I got the exact model I reserved, aside from a couple dings was in very good shape and fairly low mileage. Airport transfer was easy enough, they pick-up curbside and didn't keep me waiting very long.Aggressively try to upsell you on their insurance plans. Keep in mind, Costa Rica DOES have some fairly strict liability insurance requirements for rental cars. That said, I know the laws in CR and had purchased a full zero-liability insurance policy for my trip. At the time of pick-up, they "maneuvered" their figures when trying to get me to use their insurance plan, which was shady from the get go. My biggest issue was that they DID end up changing me for $78 in insurance (and several other fees) without my permission! I am currently contesting the charge with AMEX, but I ended up being charged over $100 more than the quote from Kayak, without my permission. Shop elsewhere.

My prepaid insurance through your website was not honored. I had to spend $250 extra just on the insurance. The car was 5 years old and beat up. It had 110000 kilometers on the odometer. I reserved automatic and I was offered a manual transmission for the same money. Major disappointment. Also they requested $1,000.00 deposit!!! That’s way far from the industry standard.

Gutless wonderCar was clean and full of gasWe rented a Diahatsu Terios 4x4 because we would be taking many very hilly, dirt roads. This car has a small engine and barely made it up many hills. We had to put it in 1st gear all the way up. It was truly a gutless wonder and would recommend renting a 4x4 with a larger engine.

Beware - The counter reps will try to sell you the prepaid petrol, stating it is cheaper at Budget than at petrol stations. This is not true. Also decline the damage insurance even if they claim it is 'mandatory'. They're running a scam at this location. The San Jose location clearly advertises that you can decline the insurance if your credit card covers rental insurance - just make sure to have a document from your credit card company (all it takes is a quick phone call) clearly stating that your rental will be covered in Costa Rica.

Car was in good shape and cleanBudget in Costa Rica slapped on a $20 per day tax despite the fact that we had 2 kinds of insurance already. The website said "SUV" large car that would seat 6 people with seat belts and when we arrived they said gave us their version of a large car- a smaller car that seated 5 people. One of us had to ride without s seat belt. Very frustrating!!! We tried to safeguard against both of these and feel very taken advantage of!!!

Hidden mandatory Insurance charges and BS Gas CharCar was in good shape and did well on roads.Kayak quoted a price that did not include the mandatory $20/day insurance so there was a perception that Budget was less than others when that was untrue and misleading. Was nervous about a Costa Rica rental but...The vehicle was exactly what was advertised. It was a Diahatsu Bego, automatic, all wheel drive, with no bells or whistles. Despite the worst roads I had ever driven on (Monteverde), the vehicle ran like a champ. I was very nervous about check in and check out. We took video of the SUV at checkout. The return was very smooth. They had many vehicles to check in so I'm glad we arrived early. We used our credit card for collision and paid bought the mandatory liability through National. They insisted it was $24/day (required), when I was told over the phone $12/day. Only when I told him this did he show the options for the two. Ultimately we did go with the 0 deductible $24/day over the 80/20 liability.

Kayak good - Allianz Travel Insurance Policy - InvalidKayak- is a good rental place, the only issue was the car on the picture (Toyota RAV 4) is the bigger modle than the one offered (Daihatsu Terios). I must admit, this is confusing, so upon arrival we had to upgrade. (5-people and luggage) For people who want to rent cars to travel Costa Rica!!!!!! Just rent the car and get the insurance locally. Original offer $97.72 (car) + Allianz insurance $117 = $216 Officiall end total = $745Allianz Travel Insurance policy - One receives an offer for a travel insurance policy from a renown company, this is a scam. This insurance policy is not valid in Costa Rica. Third party insurances are not accepted in Costa Rica. I dont understand why this happens in 2017 and why Kayak does not mention this. Please find attached a copy of my mail to Allianz who have not responded so far and to file a claim as we all know becomes more and more difficutl to put people off to file claims. Dear Ladies and Gentlemen Upon arrival in Costa Rica I was deeply alarmed and shocked that this kind of scam still exists. This was a rather negative start to the awaited holiday. It gives the country a negative touch, although you are the ones that should know better and are responsible. The rental car which I booked is fine, but the Insurance which you sold me is not accepted. There is only one insurance accepted here and this is the Costa Rican one which is Government designated! The car rental companies do not accept 3'rd parties into which category you are. Please kindly clarify and state why you as a worldwide operating insurance company sell customers these insurance policies.I was required to buy a new insurance (local) otherwise they would not have given me the rental car. I have documents proving that third party insurances are not valid in Costa Rica. In the year 2017 issues like this should not occur to a renown company like yours. Kindly awaiting your response and the reimbursement of the insurance costs. Best regards

Blindsided by "Required Insurance Coverage"When I made my online reservation for a vehicle in Liberia, Costa Rica I was quoted a rate of $112 USD. I also checked with my credit card company to verify that I was covered for insurance, liability and collision, when using my credit card as the payment form for the transaction. When checking in to pick up my vehicle at the Liberia Thrifty location I was told that the government of Costa Rica requires renters to purchase this insurance which more than tripled my rental price from the quoted $112 to $375!!! No where on the online reservation site was there any mention of the required insurance coverage or the outrageous cost of this coverage! Thrifty should make more of this ripoff!!!

Insurance Scam and damage scam--awfulOur vehicle was fine and available but had many scratches and a dented bumper. We were forced to pay for full coverage insurance from thrifty at the counter by the agent. We had already purchased insurance thru Allianz when we booked online. This was refused. We had to pay an additional 45$ per day on top of our plan we already paid for. We refused and they wouldn't give us a car or lesser basic option. Since it was late at night with a child and we were offsite we felt very vulnerable with no great options. Our quote of 301$ became 698$ plus 90$ we already paid. When we returned the manage told us there was a basic package for 17$ per day. Also they blamed us for a dent in bumper which was another scam. We had photos to dispute. We were not charged since we had full coverage but if we hadn't they planned to hit us up for that too. Still waiting to hear back from management at Thrifty Liberia. Stay away and document any damage w photos when checking out. Always worth it.

Bait and Switch!NothingThe online price was $122. The note said that we may be required to pay for insurance at the desk; typical insurance was $12-$14/day. Research said that my Collision Damage Waiver on my credit card would not be honored unless I had a letter from the company stating it would be honored in Costa Rica. I had that in hand and still they would not accept it. The total I would have had to pay? $464! We walked away, hired a driver/taxi whenever we wanted to go somewhere and still saved money. I will not book a car through Kayak ever again.

Economy Rent-a-Car posts a low price on services like Kayak/Priceline- but then when you get to the pickup spot in Costa Rica you learn that mandatory insurance will cost you much more than the cost of the car. At that point you have little choice but to either get no car, or pay the overage, as the booking is non-refundable. It feels upsetting and dishonest. Please stop recommending Economy in Costa Rica.

Staff was friendlyPrice is incredibly misleading. What I reserved was a week long rental for a SUV. When we finally got to the rental counter, they surprised us with government mandated insurance, which caused the price to skyrocket. By the end of it, the cheapest option we had, which was “insurance” that still has us liable for all damages and expenses to the sum of $500+ for a week. Had I known the total price before booking, I wouldn’t have even bothered. Look elsewhere for a car rental.

I am a loyal Avis customer; my company uses it as a preferred rental car company, and I have always been happy with the customer service and transparency I have received by Avis and its employees. At the moment I am with my spouse on a corporate retreat in Costa Rica and today we went to the Avis office at the Liberia International Airport to pick up a car that we had reserved through the Avis website. The person at the front desk was very polite and helped us checkout our rental. However, when time came to buy car insurance, while we were aware of the need to purchase the government-mandated SLI and we were very happy to pay its cost, the employee refused to accept my credit card insurance. We discussed this issue for a while, in a friendly manner. The Avis employee explained to us that we would need a letter from my credit card company (i offered both my Visa and my American Express cards to cover insurance) that confirms the coverage offered by them. We were caught by surprise by this request since there had been no mention of the need to present this letter in any of the communications that I had received by Avis, otherwise I would have been happy to ask Visa or AE for it. As you can imagine, at that point we were in a very uncomfortable position at the front of a line of other customers and under pressure to get to our final destination. So, left with no other options, we felt we were pressured by Avis to purchase one of the daily options for CDW. Which coverage, when I looked into the fine print, has a much lower coverage and a higher deductible than the one offered by my credit card. It seems that this is a very deceptive and unfair business practice that Avis Costa Rica is using with its customers. This is no way of honoring the name of Avis worldwide and leaves your loyal customers with a bad taste in our mouth, feeling as if we had been deceived.

Be prepared and it will be a mediocre experience - expect arguments. 1: Bring letter from Credit Card Company with your name and last 4# outlining coverage or you will pay for additional daily coverage (we did this thank god) 2: You will pay minimum 16.99/day mandatory CR govt insurance - just know that in advance (that was rate for Nissan Versa) 3: Video walk around of car - these guys are shiesters (argued with me for 15 minutes about a preexisting ding that was noted on the prerental inspection because it was drawn on top of bumper instead of middle of bumper) 4: Argue the 12% fee they try and tack on I think it was called “convience” or something along those lines.

Beware: After a lot of hidden fees, they will charge you somewhere between 50% - 75% more than any deal you get on line. Additionally, if you reserve a mid sized car, you’ll be lucky to get a compact car, in decent shape.

Didn’t have our car. Very bad

Worst rental car company out there, reviews are bad aswell but it makes sense. Got quoted at $180 online and when we got there it was $254, everything said and done we returned the car and now theres another $224 charge on my partners credit card ontop of the $254. Avoid this company like the plague. Please try some other company.

Kayak sold us the rental and insurance for one price and when we got there it was more then double we are so upset about the drastic cost difference we didn't figure that cost and it affected are whole vacation. Kayak should be more aware of the outside country costs and that you can't buy USA insurance for an out of country car! Disgusted and feel a refund from kayak would be the right thing for kayak to do!!!!

Made us purchase insurance twice.Car was what we expected. The rate that we were given was not the rate that they made us pay. We paid for the extra insurance when we booked online and when we got to Avis they said that they wouldn't take that insurance, even after we showed proof of it. We rented the car with our credit card that also had insurance, but they made us pay $29 extra per day in insurance. They said that was the basic rate and wouldn't let us take the car without it. So we paid for insurance twice. We watched as they did it to the guy who came behind us too. We researched it and we had the right to refuse but then they had the right to refuse our rental. We were in the country with kids and couldn't be stuck without a car so they had us in a catch 22. We paid the extra money, but for a 7 day rental it was nearly twice the original amount. We rent yearly in Costa Rica, and never had this happen. Will never use Avis in Costa Rica again.

Please have a manager reach out. No car was provided. Family of 5 left at the airport with no transportation.

Our car was not available to us when we arrived. And we had booked in March 2021. Absolutely appalling. No text notifications and left stranded on Christmas Day with two kids and no transportation.

I had a reservation booked for 4 months. We showed up in Liberia, Costa Rica to be told that they didn’t have a car and couldn’t provide a replacement. We saw at least 3 other groups that Firefly said this to within a 10 minute period. We were told by a different car rental agency that Firefly did have cars but our rate was too low so they were saying they didn’t have the cars to then turn around and rent them at a higher rate. This complete flake on our car rental reservation cost us an extra $1,000

No cars available and no restitutionI arrived and went to talk to an agent and they said they see my reservation but don't have any cars available. Bad enough, but they didn't even care. They made no effort to rectify the situation and gave me a "tough luck" attitude.

Confirmed, but no car. They helped call around to find another rental agency that had a car for us around the same price point. It didn't work though because their age policy was different. There was no car. We went to pick it up and they hadn't received our request and didn't even have the caright we reserved.

Ready for this? No cars available when I arrived at the airport. That’s right. No cars. Told me they were sorry. Never again.

Additional chargers explained as insurance at pick up that were not outlined in original reservation

They had the reservation, and when we arrived at the Airport basically told us they had sold too many cars to other people and scratched our name off he list providing zero help and assistance. Greedy they go with the most expensive reservations and leave you at the airport with no car. the don't even advise you before you arrive that they cancelled you.

Poor communication about the whole process, the insurance. Did not feel like they were looking out for my best interests after I was involved in an accident which was completely the other persons fault.

Deceiving Insurance PolicyBy the time we arrived to Hertz in Costa Rica, we already purchased an insurance policy via Allianz, a reputable company that we have used for medical coverage as well. Hertz would not accept this policy and forced us to purchase their own at a higher value. From $99 to $245 dollars. I thought that was not acceptable and at this moment pursuing a reimbursement.

They cancelled my rental a couple of days before arrival “due to COVID”. Yet they were still renting other cars. Jerk move, Europcar.

Top tips for renting a car at Liberia Airport

  • A car rental at Liberia Airport (LIR) will efficiently cater to your transit needs in Guanacaste. Public transportation from the airport is inadequate since bus services are not frequent. Also, taking a taxi from the airport can be relatively expensive, especially if you wish to explore attractions in this area. Alternatively, having your own set of wheels will enable you the freedom to explore outside the typical popular beaches in Guanacaste. Moreover, you will skip the delays and waiting periods associated with public transportation from LIR.
  • For renters on a tight budget, consider going for the cheaper cars, such as an economy or compact. You should check out all the onsite car rental providers at LIR and compare the rates to find the best deal available. Also, if your credit card covers all your insurance needs, you can decline the optional insurance cover offered by your car rental at Liberia Airport. Confirm whether you are eligible for discounts to save up some money. You can also have your rental provider remove the charged extras you don't need from your car.
  • When picking up your car rental at Liberia Airport, consider inspecting your car for damages and have them documented. You can also take photos or a video of the vehicle as proof in case you need any. Also, be on the look for possible safety issues when inspecting your car. Ensure all door locks are functional and ask for the airbag service report. If anything is amiss, request another car. Moreover, inquire about the type of gas your vehicle uses and the gas policy the car rental operates. Finally, read through the rental agreement and analyze the terms and conditions before signing it.
  • For Liberia Airport car rental payments, credit cards are the primary payment method accepted. Major credit cards such as MasterCard and Visa are typically accepted, but they must bear the renter's name. However, some rental providers at LIR accept debit cards but demand a security deposit. The security deposit varies with the car rental provider. Also, additional charges and restrictions apply for renters with a debit card.
