There’s a wide array of attractions to go off-road, like Arikok National Park, which is surrounded by cacti, dunes, and unique rock formations, or the Natural Pool, which you have to go through a rugged road to get to. Most of the rural roads are rough and riddled with potholes.

Where are the best places to park in Oranjestad?

When it comes to parking, there are many areas in the city and on the island, but be careful not to park in prohibited areas. Don’t park along a yellow stripe either on the road or on a bridge. The city has parking meters that charge approximately ƒ2 ($1.11) per hour from 7am to 7pm. Meters have a number that you need to enter when recharging the space. You’ll have to move the car 15min after your time expires, to avoid getting a parking ticket. Any yellow parking space is reserved for those with permits. There are many free parking spots further from the main town.

Make sure you confirm how many people and bags will be in the rental vehicle. Also double check that they make sure it is at the airport location and not changing the location like they did with us. It probably made the rental car a little bit cheaper, but with having to pay a $60 taxi to get there probably ended up being a wash and wasting a good amount of time.

I recommend renting a car, as it provides comfort and flexibility to move around easily and visit the different beaches at your own pace.

Put newspaper down in the car if you go to the beach. Lots of sand that may need to be vacuumed up that may cost a fee if you don’t do it. We cleaned ours well, but if you don’t want another task on vacation, this helpful tip came from the staff.

You do not need a large vehicle, unless you are going to go 4-wheeling. The Versa, MG5, Accent are perfectly good vehicles to go around the Island.

Driving is intense. Learn the road signs and understand traffic circles before you come.

JosephephDec 2023

If you don’t plan on getting data on your phone, at least download the map ahead of time. For all us, North American drivers, Aruba drives on the correct side of the road! There’s not a single traffic light that I saw on the island. Everything is traffic circles makes you really appreciate Them because when I got back home, traffic lights are really ticking me off! The roads are well marked drivers are competent, very safe island to drive on. No troubles at all!

Oranjestad is nothing short of picturesque, and for you to have the flexibility to make stops and soak in the beauty of the island, you would need to have a vehicle. Car rentals in Oranjestad offer you the convenience and ability to explore the island at your leisure without schedule rushes or worrying about missing buses. Once you get your car of choice from Oranjestad car rentals, hit the freeway and visit places like the California Lighthouse about 9 miles away or the Butterfly Farm about 7 miles away.
When you land at the Aruba Queen Beatrix International Airport (AUA), you’ll find the rental car facility inside the airport. Once you exit customs, walk straight ahead about 60 feet, where you’ll find the rental car counter. You have the option to book your car through KAYAK, after which you’ll find it waiting for you at the airport. There are various car rentals in Oranjestad, including Alamo, Budget, Avis, Payless, Thrifty, and Hertz.
The city of Oranjestad is conveniently located in the middle of Aruba, which means that nearly everything interesting is close and within driving distance. Driving is on the right side of the road, and when you turn left, the oncoming traffic will have the right of way. There are many traffic circles in Aruba and approaching traffic must yield to traffic already on the traffic circle. Watch out for goats and iguanas on the road, as they cause traffic in some areas. Also, look out for pedestrians during carnivals and events. The signage is not very visible, so having a car with navigation capabilities will go a long way.
Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba, and you can expect heavy traffic, especially during rush hour, which spans from 6am to 9am, then 5pm to 7pm. The LG Smith Boulevard, better known as Sasakiweg, north of Oranjestad, is one of the busiest roads. It’s a four-lane highway, and it could be congested anytime depending on the number of tourists and locals commuting to different areas of the island.
Small rental cars in Oranjestad are around 27% cheaper than other car types, on average

Service was excellent, no complaints here. The issue was the address you have in your records is incorrect, does not even exist anymore. You still have it listed on the website. That said, the woman at the counter, did not get her name, was excellent. Helped me out even with the address problem. Needed to return the car as the driver side front tire had cracks in it, really???? Again, the same woman was able to help me out with a new vehicle, she is to be commended for her work ethics.

The pick up took forever, the lady said she did not have our reservation, she initially tried to charge us more money then said she would give us a discount - it was all very confusing and I did not understand. She told us we would be charged a large security deposit that would be refunded a couple of weeks after we returned the car - which seemed really really odd to me that they would hold that much of my money for so long. I checked my credit card and they did not do it that way but at the time, her explanation was troublesome and I didn’t have the ability to check my credit card and see what they were charging me. It made me feel uncomfortable that I was being taken advantage of. The return was a better experience- pretty quick and easy.

The car was the worst car I’ve ever driven driven. It had more dings and damage to it. There was lots of noises coming from the engine. It was all scratched. We called to say there was a noise coming from the engine. The lady said she would come and pick it up. We almost lost our reservation at a restaurant. She never showed up or got a phone call. When we got to dollar rental in Aruba, they informed me that they didn’t have any SUVs available (which is what I reserved) and offered a minivan which I don’t feel comfortable driving. When I asked for a regular sedan instead they told me they don’t have anything available. It was either the minivan or go with a local rental place they work with. We went with the local rental Place they recommended and received the worst beat up tiny SUV. I will never book with dollar again.

Loved that they were able to accommodate us. When we booked the rental, it was for seven people. We didn’t realize there would be no space for luggage. The seven passenger SUV did not fit us nor our luggage. We asked if we could get a sprinter van and they said no, they didn’t have any in stock. We ended up with a 12 passenger van, which was more than enough space but not easy to get around in Aruba, and challenging to park. The staff at both check-in and return were very helpful and kind. We also assumed that when we put in the airport location that is where we would’ve been picking up the car however, the airport location sent us to a hotel that was a $60 cab ride away. Still don’t understand how that happened, but it all worked out, just way more expensive than we had originally planned.

2.0 Poor

Intermediate SUV

Terrible experience. Travelled with my wife and two small children. Due to airline issues we were delayed several times and got there 3 hrs after the scheduled pick up time. Went to the office and they told me that because I was late they had nothing available for me. I was told they had over booked as well and that even if I showed up on time, there was a chance I wouldn’t get a car. I asked if there was anything available and the worker got on her phone and walked to the back. Came back and told me that they could get me a car only if I paid $700.00 cash. This would of been more than what I was quoted for online. I asked what kind of scam they were running and they told me to leave. I had more than enough money to pay, but the fact that they were trying to get more money out of me due to our situation does not sit well. Terrible customer service and experience. My recommendation is to look for local companies!

Standard SUV

Terrible They indicated that the auto insurance policy that I purchased thru your associated company would not be recognized by Avis and therefore I needed to purchase another policy. I believe my $54 purchase should be refunded. I paid another $72 to Avis.

Airplane was a couple of hours late and they gave away our car. No cars available. Hertz in Aruba was a much better experience. Highly recommend them over Avis in Aruba!!

The pick up and drop off was quite easy. We had no mechanical problems with the Car. We were able to experience the pleasure of driving around Aruba. Regards Joe Benjamin
