Top tips for renting a car in Finger Lakes

  • With Fingerlakes car rentals, you get to choose your ideal car style. When taking kids to a ski resort in Bristol Mountain, consider a full-size SUV, which will give you enough space for gear. A minivan or passenger van (depending on headcount) for a weekend getaway with friends is perfect. If you’re planning to fly out through one of the nearby airports, reserve a one-way rental- a compact or economy-class model will suit you well. When taking a long-term rental for long distances, think about your comfort. Pick a  rental vehicle with enough legroom and one in which you can comfortably sleep. For instance, a mid-size SUV, e.g., a cross-over station wagon with foldable back seats and tinted windows, fits the bill.
  • When picking a car from the rental counter, you must show your driving license; other documentation, including your credit card, should match the name on your DL. A learner's permit won't allow you to rent a car. Car rental companies encourage you to take an excess insurance policy. If you choose not to take their coverage (which is often more cost-effective), then make sure that your personal policy or credit card can cater for damages that may occur during the trip (you never know what will happen).
  • Expect to pay tolls while driving on the NY State Thruway. Most Finger Lakes car rentals provide a pre-paid toll program featuring the E-ZPass at a reasonable fee. A rental car with E-ZPass has an electronic device that's automatically detected as you drive on the Thruway. Charges will be deducted from the rental agency's pre-paid account, so you don't have to use your own cash.
  • There are many places to park, particularly if you go camping at one of the great state parks. Parking in campgrounds is available at modest fees. Throughout the Finger Lakes region, dispersed camping is permitted around forests. You can also use rail trail parking and overnight parking in some well-known stores, but be sure to request permission from the manager.

  • Should I rent a car in Finger lakes, New York?

Renting a car in the Finger Lakes region of New York is the best way to enjoy scenic drives. It's safe and convenient, thanks to the wide-open and well-maintained roads. An added advantage of getting around in Finger Lakes car rentals is that you can pull over to explore its beautiful nature - this area has rivers, waterfalls, gorges, and more. The Cayuga Lake Scenic Byway is one of the favorite routes for road trips. Use an interactive map to find the best byway destinations and featured tourist spots on this road. If you're from another state or country, you can use your state-issued DL unless you become a resident of New York, in which case you need a New York State DL. An International Driving Permit is not necessary but could be helpful when renting a car.

  • What is driving like in Finger Lakes?

Unless the road signs indicate otherwise, drive at 55 mph around Finger Lake towns. However, you should slow down to 40 mph within the state parks. Keep your seatbelt fastened at all times. Route NY-414 has some of the most beautiful scenes along Seneca Lake- lush vineyards and wineries are on the way. The best vistas of Canandaigua Lake are best experienced on County Road 12, Naples, NY, which leads to the southernmost part of the lake. It is a winding road nestled between hills and villages. Remember to pack some lunch for a picnic.

  • How old do you have to be to rent a car in Finger Lakes?

Even though anyone aged 16 and above can apply for a driving license in New York and start driving, car rental agencies in Finger lakes only rent out vehicles to customers who are a least 18 years. Nevertheless, drivers below 25 incur a surcharge because the provider perceives them as less experienced and more likely to cause accidents. Younger drivers are also limited to particular categories of vehicles. For instance, they are not eligible to rent full-size SUVs. Before picking a company, ask whether they have an upper age limit.
