What are some rules about parking in Jerusalem?

For those driving Jerusalem van rentals, here is a quick rundown of some things you need to know about parking in the city. Don't park against red and white painted curbs because that signifies illegal parking zones. However, you may park against a blue and white curb, which is paid, legal parking. If there is no meter for your parking spot, find the closest parking machine in the vicinity, pay, get a ticket, then display it on your van’s dashboard. Yellow signs posted near the blue and white curbs will tell you the price for parking, the time limits, and when parking in that spot is free. If you find a gray curb with no signage forbidding parking or demanding payment, you can park there legally and for free.

How old do I have to be to rent a van in Jerusalem?

To secure Jerusalem van rentals, you need to be at least 21 years old and no older than 75, and you must have had your license for at least one year. If you are younger than 25, some rental car companies may charge you an extra fee for being a Young Renter. If you are younger than 25, it is worth it to call around to try to find a rental agency that will not assess this extra fee.

Should I buy the car rental agency’s insurance when I'm renting a van in Jerusalem?

If, when you rent cars in the United States, you usually depend on your own personal insurance or a credit card to cover the insurance of your rental, keep in mind that these methods may not be valid for vehicle rentals in foreign countries. Make sure you check with either your personal insurance or your credit card before your trip to Jerusalem to see whether they will cover your van rental. If they will not, or if you forget to check, it is worth it to invest in the car rental agency’s insurance policy. Getting into a car accident without any coverage, especially in a foreign country, could result in a very dicey situation.

Americans may feel a bit discombobulated driving in Jerusalem because the city is arranged in what could be called the opposite of a grid. The terrain is hilly, and the roads are very much built around the contours of old roadways and buildings, creating very winding streets that can be challenging to navigate. Consider using the navigation app Waze, which, as it so happens, is a product of Israel, and it works very efficiently in Jerusalem.

The staff was great. The car was brand new and the location was just so easy and convenient. I’ve been renting cars in Israel for over 18 years and the Mamila location is by far the best there is.

Staff was polite, and most spoke English - the manager was fluent which is a lot more than I can say about my Hebrew! Car was fine, staff explained all the particulars (they use a security code for the car and set the emergency brake each time the car is parked, which isn't standard in the USA).

Car was great; but it took quite a while for it to be delivered for pickup. Insurance cahrge was very expensive when compared to other dealerships

Here’s is an unmet need: Israel has switched to paying for parking with Cello or Pango. Pango only works with Israeli phones. Cello claims not to, but I could not get Cello to send a connection to my phone, so it did not work. If you cannot park, you cannot drive, as a foreigner. Rental companies need to fix this.

They didn't have a car available for me within six hours of my reservation time, and kept telling me to come back it was going to be there soon. it never came. i'm not sure they've given me a refund either.

Compact SUV

everything was amazing and flowed smoothly at first, i payed one upfront fee through kayak which was a good price. when i came to pick up the car, the clerk said i need to pay an extra "3rd party liability" insurance (even though i had cc insurance), that came out to an extra 14$ a day, plus tax. but the cherry on top is that hertz took an extra 17% from what i paid to kayak because they didnt want to pay the taxes off the top. im sure this is all in the contract but it is pretty messed up to now be paying more than double what i originally rented the car for. DO NOT RENT A CAR IN ISRAEL THROUGH KAYAK.

Turned out that I rented a car that was too small for all the luggage that we had and they gave me a free upgrade although it wasn’t clean but that was OK. Drop off they had someone help us with our luggage and we were able to get to the airport with their shuttle right away. He was very helpful and friendly.

The customer-facing staff decided to close the office 5 minutes early and threatened me that I would have to keep the car incurring expenses for another couple of days over the weekend, They were rude and dismissive, and the only way I could return the car was to call their manager and complain. Furthermore, the staff neglected to inform me about the option to add the car to my road toll payment app. This lack of information led to me incurring a high service fee for toll road payments, which I consider to be a very poor business practice. Overall, the car was fine, but the service was deplorable, and I will not be hiring from Budget again!
