This depends on what you're planning to do. If you're going to make the most of a hire car and take day trips for sightseeing in the surrounding areas, you pretty much have free rein in vehicle choice. Go for the model that best suits the size of your party. Or spoil yourself with a luxury or sports car. However, if you're planning to spend your time in the city itself, you'll appreciate getting something compact to help negotiate the pedestrians and cyclists, and save on fuel. A compact city car, a hatchback or a small saloon will be ideal.

Utrecht has the same standard speed limits as the rest of the Netherlands. This means 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on roads outside built-up areas and 100 km/h on highways. However, these limits are also time-sensitive: different limits apply at different times of the day. For instance, you can drive at up to 130 km/h on highways between 19:00 and 06:00. However, be very careful in the downtown and residential areas of Utrecht, as the speed limit drops to 30 km/h, and in the centre you're encouraged to drive at a walking pace of around 15 km/h.

Most of the free street parking in Utrecht is occupied from early in the day, and is only available at posted off-peak hours. Your best bet is to look on Florence Nightingalelaan. There's plenty of paid on-street parking available, but the municipality charges quite high prices to discourage it. You can pay up to around €4.65 an hour (about ₹420.00). The city's car parks are a bit more reasonable, coming in on average at between about €3.50 – €4.50 per hour (roughly ₹320.00 – ₹400.00).
