The car I received had been used by a smoker, even though all Hertz cars are supposed to be non-smoking. It was turned over to me with the front seat passenger's seatbelt wrapped around the headrest. The Hertz employee spent about three minutes trying to release the seatbelt, and then told me, "You will have to YouTube it." The passenger's seat could not be used. It took me about an hour and a half to free the seatbelt, including YouTube and other web research. Regarding the smell of smoking, I called Hertz after I arrived at my destination. They recorded my complaint, and suggested that I buy a container of spray deodorizer. This did not solve the problem. The day after I returned the car, I received an updated invoice, charging me $400 as a smoking fee. It took about an hour on the phone to get this charge removed, including the holding time and the many minutes necessary to get through the AI customer service preventer.Reviewed 2026 Jul 15

It took at least 15 minutes after picking up the car and getting behind the wheel to exit the hertz parking lot because of some apparently new proprietary gates that were poorly staffed. After returning the car began receiving daily emails and text messages claiming damage to the car based upon imaging technology that claims to identify dents, photos that show no visible damage and demanding a deposit! to begin the repair process. We did not pick up the car. There was a problem with the license because it was in greek and not international. Fair enough but we have sent the license (full copy) to Hertz two weeks before the rental and they reported no problem. At the rental deskWe requested then for the second driver who holds an international license to be the main driver. The reply was no because the car was rent through booking.com and not directly through Hertz. They offered the alternative to rent the car directly through Hertz at a cost of 920 euro (triple the cost of the boking.com / kayak rental). We refused. We had a penalty from booking.com for not hiring the car. In simple words Our holiday was totally ruined. Never againReviewed 2026 Jul 09

Pickup was listed to be at the airport. When I arrived to the airport Hertz counter, they told me the vehicle was not there and had to be picked up at another location. I had to travel to the other location in order to pick the vehicle up.Reviewed 2026 Jul 07
