Pros: The Toronto front desk and garage staff were friendly but the front desk was disorganized. The lady charged me for two drivers for 3d, instead of only adding a second driver for the last day of my trip, as I had requested.
The car had a mechanical maintenance error, warning of need for oil change and topping off all kind of fluids. I brought the car to Alamo in (4200 Genesee St-Buffalo Airport, NY 14225) and the rep. just explained it away. He said that the oil change was done in an unauthorized location, who was not able to reset the computer thus showing 29000 miles without an oil change as it is otherwise impossible to drive the car without it having had maintenance. They didn't have a replacement for me.
The experience in DCA was just horrible. The guy increased my charge from $342 +/- $24 (for two additional drivers the last day) to $508 without being able to explain why, not taking account of the mechanical error (of which I have a picture).
When I called the customer service, it was even worse and sent me from Pontus to Pilate telling me that I should contact the Toronto office for the erroneously added additional drivers for extra two days as "it is a different company" as if Alamo in Canada is not part of Alamo in US.
They not only did not apologize for the dangerous driving conditions that I was subjected too and the extra detour that I had to do, she was (Melanie, i thing) arrogant and said that my car actually should have costed me $540 and that the $508 that I was being charged is a favor.
She also referred me back to "Expedia" where I had rented the car, while I had rented it through HotWire. I wasted 2 hours unsuccessfully trying to sort out their error, after a grueling 8 and a half hour drive (instead of the 7.5, because of need for detour to their dealership in Buffalo)
Get their international operations in line and coordinate internally. Ensure that the maintenance is done with authorized dealerships. Don't overcharge customers. Have replacement cars ready, when there are mechanical warning signs.

Pros: The car was quite new and very comfortable to drive!
Pros: The staff were very friendly and helpful. There was no fuss, just signed for the pick up and away we went.
Cons: Really bad phone customer service. based on the USA and not much local knowledge or information. Local office doesn't answer the phone if you need support
Cons: When we came to pick up the car on thanksgiving, we were shocked to find out that there were no cars available, with 9 other groups ahead of us waiting for a car even though they also had a reservation. We were then told it could be hours before we got one. We had to drive all the way to collingwood for a family dinner and we almost missed it due to this inconvenience. It was nice that two free days were offered once we called and spoke with a manager. But after this experience, we are worried that this may happen again and do not want to have this happen again. We also never received an email confirming the free days that we were promised.
Worst Experience
Pros: Nothing. Poor service.
Cons: I booked the 7 passengers van for one week. Pick Up location: Willington Downtown. I called them 4 hours before pick up time. To my surprise, I was told that van is not available- we are sorry. I urged that we have one week vacation plan and I have guests from USA but no help. The only thing the cust. Rep. was repeating "we are sorry". I went to airport with the hope that someone will offer a solution. Again the agent refused to give a van initially citing that pick up location on your reservation is downtown. I had to fight to convince why I need the van. Finally I got the van but I had tonpay $250 more.
- Why they did not call me in advance to inform us that van is not available?
- Why did they charge $250 more?
- Why the manager in downtown did not offer alternate solution?
Worst experience with Alamo.
Pros: The gentlemen were most kind and incredibly helpful.
Easy pickup easy droppoff.
Pros: Quick and easy. No line, car was ready. Convient way to drop off after working hours.
Stressful after-hours drop off - poor signage in underground garage
Cons: My pick up location in Montreal was unable to give me specific information about the Toronto after hours drop off, but said it would be straightforward. That was not my experience. The drop off at 200 Wellington West was poorly marked. The signage disappeared suddenly and I had a lot of difficulty figuring out where to leave the car.
I kept circling the garage in my car but was unable to find anything. Finally, I parked and walked around all of P2 to find the spot. As a single woman by myself, walking around P2 at night felt very unsafe. When I found the spot for Alamo renters, I was then confused about the key drop off. The only key drop off box in the area was labelled National and Alamo was not mentioned. Again, I walked around the underground garage to find it. I finally figured out that I was meant to leave the key for my Alamo rental in the National drop off box. I recommend that the signage for after hours drop offs be improved.
Cancelled my booking, gave me lower class car at the higher rate
Pros: Best part was when it ended.
Cons: The dealer cancelled my booking without making any attempt to contact me. When i arrived, no one was in the office. The dealer revived the booking but gave me a lower class car at the higher rate, saying he had no other cars. The corolla was filthy inside with food stains. The drop off destination on the website apparently didn't exist any more so i had to deliver across town at additional cost and effort (Had to keep the car overnight). I later discovered this to be a lie, with the drop off across the street to my accommodation.
Pros: Services by Alamo personnel
Cons: Service & low processing fee for tolls
