Top Tips for Renting a Van in Montreal

  • If you’re flying into Montreal Pierre Elliot Trudeau International Airport (YUL), Montreal Mirabel International Airport (YMX), or Montreal Saint Hubert Longueuil Airport (YHU), then consider getting your rental van from the airport. As these are some of the most popular Montreal van rental locations in the city, we recommend making a reservation well before your travel. This will help you beat off the competition from other renters to ensure you get your rental van of choice.
  • Many visitors coming to Montreal choose van rentals as their preferred way to get around the city. Firstly, the Montreal van rentals cover routes and destinations that the regular city buses don't serve. The van rentals also offer a convenient way of carrying those traveling as a family or other large groups. What's more, the vans also excel in cargo space meaning they will conveniently fit all your luggage including hiking and camping gear.
  • While driving around Montreal is often easy, getting around the city, especially during the rush hour periods can be a daunting task. Like any other major city, the morning rush hour is usually between 6:30 am to 8:30 am while the evening rush hour is between 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm. If you're approaching Montreal from the South Shore, use Jacques Cartier Bridge or the Champlain Bridge for easy access. If your destination is downtown, use Autoroute Bonaventure.
  • There are a few rules and tips you should keep in mind while driving Montreal van rentals around the city.  You are not allowed to drive in the left lane unless you are turning left or passing. Drivers are required to put on their flicking hazard lights whenever they slow down to speeds below the speed limits. Another important tip to keep in mind is that children who are under seven years can’t be left in a car unattended.
  • 25% of our users found a van rental in Montreal for ₪443 or less
  • Book your van rental in Montreal at least 1 day before your trip in order to get a below-average price
  • November is typically the cheapest month to rent a van in Montreal, with prices around ₪52 per day. The most expensive month is July, with average prices of ₪154 per day.

When I arrived to pick up the car I was forced to wait over an hour for a car to be available. The entire waiting area at Thrifty/Hertz was packed with people sitting around waiting for their cars, as though it was a surprise that people showed up for their reservations. All of the other rental car counters were generally empty. Those companies moved their customers in and out. So it wasn’t just a busy day — those other companies were there in the same conditions.

I was sent to pick up a car from a far location where they brought the car from the airport and i could have just picked it up from there... bad allocation of resources. The gentleman at the Van Horne location is the kindest, sweetest and most helpful, but I was sent a heavy SUV when i reserved a medium sedan. Had to drive to the airport to exchange the car. The gentleman at the airport counter was also very helpful and professional. Not too impressed by the person over the phone (maybe a manager) that seemed lazy and unwilling to do the minimum work required, i overheard a conversation and the typical illiterate attitude towards customers that is inherited from the Middle Eastern person literally said" if the customer is not happy, they can go somewhere else".... Replace that kind of employee; they don't do anyone any good.

If the guy who dealt with parking when I returned the car had something more clear to prove that he works for Avis would be good otherwise I doubt if it was a good idea to hand the car keys to that person. Otherwise everything was smooth and really good. Thanks to staff and Avis

It was difficult to find where to return the car at the airport. Went to the counter to ask for help and Dollar employees couldn't care less. Employees from a different agency (Alamo) gave indications to find the exact location to return the car. The whole thing took so long that we ended up missing our flight.

Cat was nice. Pick up was not good. Car we booked was not available. We needed the large car we booked based on passengers and luggage and we had to wait for 90 min for them to locate a car for us. Book as specific car, expect that car to be available when you arrive. This didn’t happen.

I would not rent from Routes again based on my experience. Picking up our vehicle in Montreal was an absolute nightmare. It took over two hours just to get our rental car, and the office was packed with customers who had also been waiting for hours. The process was extremely slow and disorganized, making for a very frustrating start to our trip. The rental was also overpriced for a one-day rental, especially considering the excessive wait time and lack of efficiency. To be fair, the vehicle itself was clean, well-maintained, and in excellent condition. The drop-off process was also quick, easy, and hassle-free, which was appreciated. Unfortunately, those positives don’t make up for the incredibly poor pickup experience. Spending over two hours waiting for a rental car is simply unacceptable. If Routes can improve their staffing and check-in process, it would make a huge difference. Until then, I’d recommend looking at other rental companies if your time is valuable.

It is the customer relation that is awful at Routes. Never accomodating. Asking for exhorbit sums for protection. Very suspicious company. Refused to give me the car I paid for in total because they judged my Driving permit invalid because it has no picture - which is the case for a lot of people working for the government of Qc in the North. If the Gvt issued it, in itself it valid! I tried to show them my medical card with my picture and offer a proof on insurance, but nothing did it. I had to go to the Montreal Airport to rent a car for more than double the price because of this. I spoke to one of my colleagues at work who told me they had a similar incident with them.
