Pros:Pick up and drop off were very easy. Everyone was so nice. We also experienced a problem after we headed south. The Jaco Alamo office was very quick to fix the problem and get us back on the road. Gracias!!Cons:Well, the Alamo complete insurance package is crazy expensiveReviewed 2021 May 28

Pros:Great staff. Easy process. Clean car.Cons:Hidden fees and required insurance resulted in a 3x increase to quoted rate from website. Instead of $246.93, total cost was $735.13. Kayak is a joke. This is the ultimate rip-off as there was no way to accurately compare REAL cost of the rental. Further, the front end of this car was in terrible shape. At the first bump encountered, the left front end slammed loudly - which was an indicator of a car that was unsafe to drive. Very disappointed is an understatement.Reviewed 2021 Jan 03

Great experiencePros:The staff are so kind and helpful. We have only had great experiences with Alamo and this was no different. Easy pickup and drop off.Cons:The vehicle was on the older side and had an after market radio which didn't work all that well. Not a big deal thoughReviewed 2018 Feb 22

Read the fine printPros:Relatively cheap Staff was helpful Upgraded for minimum ($5 a day) chargeCons:I wasn't told I needed 3rd party car insurance in Costa Rica (not just collision insurance; apparently it's the law) until I was at the Alamo office trying to pick up my car. This was a complete surprise and about doubled the cost of my rental car. Also, the Alamo office next to San Juan International Airpirt was VERY difficult to find. We spent about an hour driving around and talked to 3 different professionals (and got 3 different locations).Reviewed 2017 Aug 02

Rate quoted online is not correct!Pros:The car we got was exactly as described online and worked great for our needs. The people we met at the Alamo location in Libera for pick up and in San Jose for drop off were very helpful and extremely accommodating with providing maps and recommendations.Cons:The rate we were quoted online was vastly different from the end price we paid. When we made our reservation online the price was around $150 for our full reservation and once we arrived at the airport in Liberia to pick up the car we were quoted 3 price options that we could choose from ranging from $450 - $660 depending on the insurance coverage we wanted. If we went with the $450 option the car rental location would put a $1,000 hold on our card that would not be lifted for at least 7 business days after we returned the car (and left the country!). We did not feel in any way comfortable with this option and the only way to not have the hold placed on our card was to go with the $660 option, so we did. At the time of pick up we were told these were required insurances/fees put in place by the country of Costa Rica that we had to pay in order to rent the car. At this point, had just traveled 10+ hours, were in a foreign country and had no other means of transportation for the duration of our vacation so had to accept the fees. In my opinion, it was still not an unreasonable total fee for the time we had the car; however, it was extremely misleading to be quoted one price online for our confirmed reservation and then required to pay another upon arrival. I suggest that if possible, this should be rectified so travelers aren't caught off guard in the future.Reviewed 2017 Jul 27

Don't buy insurance from Kayak!Pros:Alamo has a desk in the airport and a quick shuttle that takes you to the offsite location where the cars are. It's about a 5 min drive in the shuttle. Quick drop off when you're leaving and quick shuttle back to the airport.Cons:The required insurance. I bought insurance from Kayak assuming this was in conjunction with Alamo. It was not. I was required by Alamo to either put a $2500 deposit on my credit card or pay $500 for insurance for the week. I was not allowed to cancel my insurance through Kayak either.Reviewed 2017 May 11

Pros:Overall experience was good, got the car we requested, all equipment worked wellCons:Pick-up time at the airport going to off-site rental was delayed for quite some time. Also, although price on Kayak was very low, once fees and insurance were added, price was significantly higher.Reviewed 2017 Apr 10

Pros:Car worked fine and handled the rough roads well.Cons:The pickup took about an hour even though there was no line. Just really slow. The agent told me that I had to buy insurance coverage for liability, which nearly doubled the total price. If he is right that this is required, there should be a clearer warning when the booking is made online. Even with this insurance, the price was good by U.S. standards, but it was an unpleasant surprise upon arrival.Reviewed 2017 Feb 13
