What’s the speed limit in Indianapolis?

Unless posted otherwise, general regulations permit 15 mph in alleys, 25 mph in school zones, and 30 mph in residential areas. 60 mph is permitted on interstate highways in suburban areas and up to 70 mph is allowed on rural interstate highways. Especially in the winter, it is crucial to adapt the speed to the current weather conditions.

Where are the best places to park in Indianapolis?

As long as there is no big event like the Indianapolis 500 on, parking in the city is not too difficult when compared to other big cities. On-street parking is metered in most places, but after 9 pm and on Sundays it is free. Alternatively, there are city garages and parking lots available, such as the City Park or Express Park Garage.

The line for Avis was very long and they only had 3 people checking you in. It is a 2 step process, where you check in at the airport and pickup your keys at the kiosk office where your car is parked.

Verified travelerMay 2026

I lean that you buy the insurance though rental company. Not though the broker it cheaper

PaulaNov 2025

Be prepared for bad weather. Don't rent a rear wheel drive car during winter and ask for an ice scraper.

AdamJul 2025

Don't prepay for gas, there's a gas station right at the entrance to the airport property.

MeredithJul 2025

The downtown location closes promptly at noon on Sundays. Make sure there are no events happening in town. According to many workers at the airport, the rental places way overbooked and people are frequently left w/o vehicles.

GurnamDec 2024

Get everything in writing before you leave the place and always fill the car up before you drop it off never take their fuel option

Verified travelerFeb 2025

DON'T rent an electric car. DON'T use the Avis / Budget / Payless franchises (they all share the same counter & staff). When you're given the paperwork ask "Is the car ready, and in the stall NOW ?"

Verified travelerJun 2024

Be sure to get dropped off by the commercial vehicles entrance when picking up car. Don’t go into rental cars.

Verified travelerMar 2024

Please double check your pickup and drop-off locations while booking, the results bring in the best priced and sometimes may pull in a different pickup location. The airport car rental is very convenient.

Verified travelerMar 2024

I don’t know. If you have to rent a car be incredibly careful and check your final bill. Never return a car to a closed location with an after hours drop box.

Verified travelerJan 2024

Be prepared for lots of roundabouts! People also drive much faster than the posted speed limits.

Verified travelerNov 2023

If you have a ride to/from the rental agency have your driver do pickup/dropoff at the flight arrivals area.

BrentOct 2023

Drive better and more aware of other drivers!

ArjavOct 2023

Double and triple check that the booking location is at IND airport and not off-airport.

CorinaNov 2023

People like to drive fast, but the freeways were not crowded.

Verified travelerJun 2023

Check to insure your vehicle cost and reservation cost are the same prior to pickup. Pay attention to all driving rules of where ever you're traveling, parking and visiting and your experience will be great!

Verified travelerJul 2023

There is a gas station at the airport. No need to go out of your way to get gas before drop off.

Make the most out of your trip to Indiana’s capital and rent a car upon your arrival in Indianapolis. Explore the many attractions conveniently on your own four wheels, such as the Zoo, Lilly Recreation Park, or the Lucas Oil Stadium to enjoy a game. A hire car can give travelers the flexibility they need to explore the city and the surroundings in their own time and pace.
Indianapolis Airport is over 12 miles from the city center, so renting a car upon landing is the best option to start your visit quickly and free of hassle. The airports sports its own Transportation Center, in which eight hire companies offer vehicles in all shapes and sizes. Head to the first floor of the terminal garage to find your perfect car and take the I-70 W to get to the city center in less than 20 minutes.
Indianapolis is also known as the “Crossroads of America” since various interstates like the I-465, I-65, I-70, or I-865 run through the city and connect it with the surrounding areas. At first, the many exits can be confusing, so checking the route and traffic conditions before entering Indianapolis is advised. When entering roundabouts, remain in the outer lane, as it can be hard to reach the exit once driving in the inner lane. Also, cars inside the roundabout have the right of way, so don’t stop to let other cars in.
Rush hour usually hits Indianapolis between 7-9 am in the morning and 5-7 pm in the evening. As Indianapolis spans quite a big area, it can take more than half an hour to get from A to B without traffic, so planning at least one hour ahead is a good idea. Construction sites are also a common sight in Indianapolis and checking traffic obstructions beforehand helps navigate easier through the city.

Picking up the vehicle went smoothly, and the price was very competitive compared to other options. Our only point of friction is that a witch must have cursed us to always get Jeep Gladiators when we rent cars without specifying a model. We drove around in a big goofy Tonka Truck for the whole holiday, for a second time, to the amusement of all our friends we saw. Who even rents Jeep Gladiators on purpose? We don't know, but when it's an accident, it's always us.

I reserved a car from Indianapolis to Cincinnati. When I arrived at the Avis kiosk, the lady told me that they don’t honor same day reservations and that she doesn’t have a car for me. This was close to midnight and without the great service from the people at National car rental, I would’ve been stuck in Indianapolis. I understand that it might be challenging for companies to deal with short term reservations - this one was done like 4-5 hrs before pickup - but the way this issue was handled, was extremely poor. Cherry on top was that they told me, that my booking is non-refundable and I had to go out of my way to settle this. Good thing is - I now find a new favorite company to rent from, which is National and one, I’ll never consider again, due to their poor service.

I arrived at Indianapolis Airport, went to pick up the kiosk, and it took a long time to complete the process. That's not the part that disappointed me. I was supposed to have a medium SUV, had none at the moment, and they offered me a 7-passenger van, ABSOLUTELY not. Said would be a few, and that they would have an SUV cleaned and ready. 1st SUV, kicked back, not available due to a safety recall. (Great catch on safety issue) Then offered me a GMC Terrain, ok. Now, to pick up the point, several others awaiting their vehicle waited patiently, but then no Terrain came out. Attendant asks. What am I waiting for?" The GMC Terrain he checked didn't see anything coming, and offered me a GMC Sierra Pickup. I'm fine with that, but I'm not paying extra. This is your issue, not mine. Attendant then said, "Oh, no, you will pay the same price, and I'll take a day rental off your charge. I said OK, got in the vehicle, drove off, and had a wonderful rental and time in Indy. I went to drop off at the end of the visit and was told by the attendant that I would receive an email with the receipt. I am still waiting for the email. Found a copy of the receipt in my Kayak account, and seems no discount was given to me. Very Disappointing.

Upon arrival to pick up my rental car there was only two attendants working at the budget counter with extremely long line. Which I find that very unacceptable. The car had a very nasty smell on the inside It smelled musty like the sunroof had been left open and the car had gotten wet on the inside. It is impossible to get a hold of somebody there at the local budget office at the Indianapolis airport which that is totally frustrating. I love something behind in the car and I have reported it and still have not heard anything back from them. I will not be renting from there again.

Now, in addition to Kayak, Expedia, etc, there are third parties (the two I have experienced were in China and Hong Kong). Is there a benefit to the consumer? NO. All it means is another company to pay and, therefore, higher prices for the consumers. Don't use these. Go directly to the car company.

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY they're trying to charge me an additional $79.85 for gas even though I turned it in with slightly more in it than when it was given to me! It was just under the first tick above half when I got it. I put it over the tick when I turned it in. Now just about half a tank of gas is somehow worth $80. Also, the $200 deposit was not told to me before booking, so I had to scramble for that money! Now they're saying it could take 14 days to be returned! Awful, shady practices. Would not trust them again. They seem cheaper at first for a reason.

Not a Damn Thing, I never got my rental car, d/t my booking agent not telling me that I needed a credit card, found out the day I arrived in Indianapolis. The cost of the rental was $422, I have been trying to find out from them why I still had to pay the full price, when I never got the rental, on the contract it states that if I cancelled before 24 hrs it would be $100, & during the 24hr it would be $200, I have yet to receive any answers from them regarding this situation. Mean while I had to rent from another place in the airport which costed me $600, so I could have transportation while there for a wk, trying to take care of my sick son. I also called your agency a few time to speak to someone, there was no help there either. Not Happy at all.

I was disappointed in almost every respect. a) signage in the car-rental line at IND showed "Avis/Budget" but nothing for Payless, so I walked to the counter. I was (rudely) told "I don't care what the sign says; go get in the line." b) 35 minutes later it's my turn and I explain I've rented an electric car and need to drive 100 miles roundtrip. I don't think I'll be able to charge it. What happens? The answer, best as I could figure it out, was "$70 fee". c) That seemed crazy on a $55 rental, so I asked for a gasoline car instead. After 20 minutes and an upcharge I was sent outside to stall H8 to get my car. It was a windy, cold, wet afternoon and stall H8 was empty. It stayed that way for 20 more minutes! -- So, rude staff; an upcharge; and more than an hour from arriving in the rental hall until being able to drive away. Lousy! I noticed that the Hertz counter had no wait line, and smiling staff. Note to self: next time, spend the money and go with Hertz!!

Absolutely awful. I pre-paid for this car rental and when I arrived to the Payless counter, I was told that no cars were available! Calling Payless customer service was useless. They said that the best they could do is to process a refund... how was that going to help? I was stuck at Indianapolis Airport with no means of getting to my final destination. I will never rent with Payless again.
