Pros:The car was clean and reliable.Cons:I feel there is a scam going on with their gas policy. I declined their auto fill option which they marketed heavily to me. I filled up the tank a few minutes before dropping off the car, and on my car rental receipt they charged me $12.99 for 1.3 gallons of gas. They said it was full to 14 gallons at the time of rental and that I returned it with 12.7 gallons. I know that is not true, but of course I didn't save my gas receipt. I didn't have high hopes for getting my money back since I didn't save my receipt, but to my surprise when I called the representative offered to remove it immediately. He seemed all to familiar with my type of call. If I had to guess, I'd say this is a common practice for Payless and if you don't want to get cheated out of $12.99 you have to call and complain.Reviewed 2021 Mar 02

Nickel and Dime Practices with no concern for custPros:car was decent. smelled a bit like smoke, but it was 11pm when I picked it up and wasn't going to argue.Cons:They are not clear with the contract and added a charge I verbally declined. NO ONE at the desk can do anything so you have to call and then once you call you get logged in as a "complaint". The person you speak to can't do anything either. You have to wait for the ticket item to show up in your email. You then receive an email that it is being looked into and a ticket number has been assigned and then you get a second suggesting they made no mistake and cannot refund your $. There is no person to person so it's easy to decline your request for the removal of the sham of a charge they levied without clear direction. Shady.... all of it. It was only $68, but that adds up and it would appear this is part of their profitability practice. Make them call... which many won't. Then make them email and then say "no". Dodgy practice with little to NO customer service or concern. I will NEVER rent from Payless againReviewed 2016 Dec 29

She would not give up, saying that they were short of the cars, but had plenty of the SUVs. In fact there were numerous identical cars (down to the color) in the lot. 2) The scratch and dent form was not filled out. The Payless attendant refused to fill it out, and told me to have the exit attendant fill it out. The exit attendant was bemused when I told him what the Payless attendant told me to do. He did so with some bewildered cheer. 3) Both the counter and the lot were located at the furthest and most inconvenient locations among the rental agencies. 4) I was promised a Ford Focus with the reservation, but was given a Chevy Impala. 5) The staff were generally colorless and indifferent -- except for the initial agent who was more simply antagonizing.Reviewed 2015 Nov 27

If you’re ok with zero customer service...Payless!Pros:The car ran.Cons:Pickup happened through a different brand’s counter that had a line that was an hour long. They don’t actually employ anyone , they just outsource to other brands. During pickup there was no one to talk to to confirm that dings already on the car were present or that the car came to us with half a tank of gas or that the dashboard said “change oil soon” and had the check engine light on. This is after being offered a minivan when I booked an SUV. No... it’s not ok... drop off was similar. There is no one in the garage to hand off the car to. You just leave it with your contract and key inside (per the unoccupied booth window sign). When I got home I called to confirm the car was received ok and on time. The hotline said no it wasn’t and my contract was still open. They gave me the number of the local rental desk. I called got the hotline again. They inform me that it means the desk is busy if it transfers to them. Can you transfer me to the local deal? No. Can I speak to your manager? No. Just keep calling. All day? Yes. Seriously. After calling several times a call center lady put in a ticket. I got an email back saying the car was received that morning four hours after I dropped it off. I can’t. I just can’t. Pros:Drop off was easy.Cons:Long wait at pick up. They didn’t have the compact SUV and instead suggested I take a pickup truck. I was worried about the size and they assured me it was “small or midsize.” It was giant. I could barely get out of the airport parking lot and it was difficult to park throughout my trip. Bait and switchCons:Apparently, booking a car online ahead of time means nothing. After waiting in an absurdly slow moving line, we were informed that the car we booked online and all comparable vehicles were unavailable. Instead of the Sonata that I booked, they could only offer very large trucks/SUVs with terrible gas mileage. I walked a couple lines over and went with Enterprise instead, who were fast, professional, and only a few dollars more for a lot less headache.Reviewed 2017 Jun 06
