Cons: Hertz pick up was awful. I don’t recommend hertz in Costa Rica. Our bill was double the quoted price due to Costa Rica specific insurance (and this is after fighting to wave other liabilities). The staff also made “errors” that included additional charges that they had said were removed... be very cautious when reviewing your bill especially before signing anything.
Cons: There’s nothing to do about it but be warned the Costa Rican gov. Has a monopoly on car insurance and requires that all renters purchase it. It adds a significant amount to your originally quoted price. Other than that Hertz was lovely to us.
Cons: Surprise insurance charge when we got there. Also they said rental was in terminal and it was a shuttle ride away.
Pros: The staff at hertz were conmen/incredibly rule- tried ripping us off re insurance...we actually walked out and went to Sixt
, which was a much better experience
Pros: Nothing
Cons: Didn’t let me rent the car
Cons: They don’t have the car that I booked; then tried to rent me a car at a far more expensive rate. I ended up taking a taxi.
Pros: Nothing to like. They didn’t have the car I reserved.
Cons: Worst car rental experience as they did not keep the car that I booked.
Pros: Staff told me to go to budget
Cons: If they kept my reservation. My plane was delayed and they gave my car away.
Cons: When I made my reservation, I remember that I was unable to alter the time default of 12:00pm pickup, so I figured that would still be okay since I was arriving about 3:00pm, so the car would be ready for me when I arrived. When I review my reservation, there is no language indicating that the reservation would literally expire 2 hours after the scheduled pickup time. Since I did arrive more than 2 hours after the scheduled pickup time, I was surprised to learn that there was no vehicle available to me. Nothing! So Hertz directed me to another local car rental business, which supposedly matched me with an equivalent size vehicle. The car supplied to me was substandard, however, because it had damage (cracks) on both bumpers, a weak engine to handle the curvy, steep gradients of the roads, and windshield wipers that should have been replaced way before my rental. In addition, we discovered a persistent rattle due to a loose undercarriage, and noisy/ineffective air conditioning. In the future, any rental company should make sure renters are made aware of any expiration policy, and make it easy for renters to alter the pick up/drop off times. Hertz was very disappointing.
Pros: Car was in good shape
Cons: The reservation price didn't include a $30/day mandatory insurance fee that is required I'm Costa Rica. So, my quote was for $7xx, and total cost was actually $1100. AND, the guy at the ciunter was a total dick and kept trying to sell us on the optional insurance to make us pay EVEN MORE. UGH.
Bait and Switch with Hertz in San Jose Costa Rica
Cons: We were given a very good rate when we booked but when we showed up we not given an option of taking out additional insurance. We discussed at length- the entire process of renting the car took a very long time. They tried to charge me over $500. After much discussion they wouldn't let us take the car for an amount that was over 3x the quoted rate. We really needed to get going and the Hertz facility is away from the airport so reluctantly signed. The front desk employee was rude and found VERY small print to justify the increase in the rate. I will not use Hertz again at this location.
Dissapointing
Pros: Not much
Cons: The internet booking site was COMPLETELY mis-leading. It made no mention of the exorbitant insurance fees. It felt like fraud. I'm not sure I'll ever use Hertz again, especially in Costa Rica.
